Are we really sure that beauty is everything? The answer, according to a new research published on British Journal of Psychologyit’s no. What makes us attractive goes well beyond the features of the face. It matters the way we talk, we move, and even the smell we emanate.
For years, scholars have argued that we tend to prefer the symmetrical faces and “medium” traits, interpreted as health signs and good genetic heritage. But today, a group of international researchers has tested this theory with an experiment that involved 61 participants. People have been analyzed not only through images, but also through vocal recordings, moving videos and even sweat samples.
It emerged that beauty is not the only factor that matters. Indeed, it is often not even the most important.
The attraction is multisensory
The heart of the study was to understand how we react to different sensory signals, observing them both separately and together. Each participant provided:
The researchers then asked a group of evaluators to judge the attractiveness of each participant, using only one stimulus at a time, or by combining them all together.
The surprising data? The item was the strongest attraction of attraction, much more effective than the external aspect. The body smell, on the other hand, was the least linked to the visual perception of beauty. But when images, voice and movements were proposed together – for example in a video with audio – perceived attractiveness increased significantly.
What makes us fascinating is, therefore, a sensory mix. And the true charm, the one that leaves the mark, is not seen in the mirror.
And if you don’t feel beautiful, you may be more attractive than you think
Sometimes we are the last to realize what we can be attractive to the eyes of others. The psychologist Francesca Tighinean shared five signals on Tiktok that indicate that you might like more than images:
- People lift the eyebrows when they see you
It is an unconscious reflection, called “Eyebrow Flash”, which marks interest or curiosity. - The others do everything to help you
This happens because, even unconsciously, we tend to be more available with those who attract us. It is the so -called “halo effect”. - You almost never receive congratulations on the physical aspect
It may seem strange, but often people avoid congratulating precisely because they think you are already aware of your charm. - The strangers fix you longer than normal
Frequent and prolonged visual contact is one of the clearest attraction signals. - People are surprised when you talk about your insecurities
This happens because they perceive you in a much more positive way than how you see yourself.

If you thought that only the features counted, maybe it’s time to review everything. Science invites us to look beyond the mirror: what makes us really attractive is much more human, authentic and invisible.
