Lazio festivals are real travel and taste, where each chalice tells a story and each dish hides secrets handed down from generation to generation. And then, let’s face it: where more can you taste a trees from the tree for three euros while listening to live music in a medieval square? Here are 5 select for you.
Grape feast and wines-Velletri (20-21 September)
Let’s start with a bang: the Velletri grape festival turns 93 and brings them very well. Two days in which the historic cellars of the city open the doors for guided tastings that will make you find out why the wine of the Castelli Romani has conquered the palates from all over the world.
Between a sip of Bellone and one of Malvasia, you can taste the crunchy porchetta cut at the moment, seasoned cheeses in the tufaceous caves and traditional desserts that would resurrect even the most convinced of the rods. The highlight of the party? The challenge between the Bottai, a spectacular race where artisan masters challenge each other with hammer strokes and iron rims. A show that will make you understand how much sweat is behind every barrique. As if that were not enough, the vintage costume fashion shows will transform the historic center into an open -air film set. The advice? Arrive early in the morning to enjoy the tastings calmly, before the crowd invades the roads.
The Kingdom of the Porcino-Oriolo Romano (12-14, 19-21, 26-28 September)
Three weekends dedicated to his majesty the porcino. The twentieth edition of the Kingdom of Porcino transforms Piazza Santacroce into a paradise for mycophyls (and for those who simply love to eat them, mushrooms). The fettuccine with porcini mushrooms are a religion: homemade pasta, mushrooms collected at dawn in the surrounding woods, a creaming that defining perfect would be reductive.
The menu also offers bruschetta, soups and fried mushrooms in light batter. For celiacs there is an entire dedicated line, because goodness must be democratic. Palazzo Altieri acts as a majestic frame at the event, while the fountain of the cheerful spades between the outdoor tables. The wine? Strictly local, with labels ranging from Grechetto to Sangiovese. A weekend here is worth a week of vacation in some anonymous resorts.
Ciammellocco and Longarini festival-Creton (12-14 September)
Ciammellocco sounds like a magical formula, and in fact it is. This anise -cooked salty donut, cooked at the moment and served hot, has the power to transform even the most refined of gourmet into a delicious child. Combined with the Longarini – fresh pasta seasoned with fresh tomato, wild rocket and crunchy bacon – creates a wedding of flavors that would deserve a Nobel Prize for gastronomy.
The twelfth edition of the Festival also offers quality street food and local wines tastings. The medieval village of Creton, with its castle and the ancient spas, becomes the perfect scenography for an evening that knows of authenticity. Live music accompanies tastings until late in the evening.
Porcino mushroom festival – Rocca Priora (from 5 to 7 and from 12 to 14 September)
The thirty -first festival of the porcino mushroom of Rocca Priora has dizzying numbers. Last year he attracted 50,000 visitors and this year, with the double weekend (5-7 and 12-14 September), aims to overcome. The village of Colle di Fuori becomes the Italian capital of the porcino for six intense days.
The first courses are the workhorse: Tagliatelle, gnocchi and ravioli, all strictly homemade and seasoned with porcini mullets collected in the surrounding woods. But the festival also knows how to amaze with alternative proposals. The arrosticini sore on the grill, the crispy supplies hide a stringy heart, the cutting pizza smells of wood oven. The bruschetta? A classic that becomes gourmet here.
The DOC wines of the best Lazio cellars accompany every flow rate. The selection ranges from Frascati superior to Cesanese del Piglio, passing through the Grechetto and Bellone. The naturalistic excursions in the woods allow you to find out where these treasures of the earth are born, led by expert mycologists who reveal the secrets of the responsible collection.
Lariano celebrates until September 21 (from 10 to 20 September)
Via Napoli near Lariano dresses up for the thirty -second edition of the Porcino mushroom festival, which began on September 10 and scheduled until 21. Here the approach is smart: two fixed menus that eliminate the anxiety from choice.
The complete menu for 22 euros is a complete gastronomic journey: a first to mushrooms (you can choose between different proposals), a scaloppine with the porcini mushrooms that is cut with the fork, wine from the house that flows generous, water, and the famous bread of Lariano, crunchy outside and soft inside. Do you prefer something more informal? The 16 euro menu replaces the scaloppine with a gourmet sandwich padded with local specialties.
Entertainment will also make the difference. There will be singers such as the nomads, Fred de Palma and Sal da Vinci, and comedians such as Biagio Izzo, ready to create that atmosphere of a true party that makes country festivals special.
