This morning, in the waters in front of the Mascagni terrace in Livorno, the carcass of a large cetacean was found, presumably a whale, about 15 meters long. The animal showed evident signs of decomposition, a sign that death would go back to several days before. The marine currents then dragged the carcass to the coast, making the scene visible to residents and tourists.
The Port Authority, the Local Police, the Arpat staff, the Regional Agency for Environmental Protection, and the mayor Luca Salvetti, immediately intervened on the spot. The objective of the authorities is to evaluate the conditions of the carcass and establish the safest methods for its movement and disposal, avoiding hygienic-health risks and guaranteeing public safety.
In addition, the police had to face the presence of curious and photographers who rushed to the place when the news bounced on social media and managed the area to avoid inconvenience and to allow the operations to take place safely.

Previous episodes along the Livorno coasts
This is not the first case of dead cetaceans beached in the waters of Livorno. In March 2024, a whale of about five meters had been found in the Antignano district, while in 2022 another specimen had beached between the hamlets of Chioma and Quercianella. Also on those occasions, the Port Authority and the Fire Brigade had managed the recovery and return to the open sea of the carcasses.
The discovery of the whale highlights the importance of constant monitoring of the coast and marine fauna. Events like this, in addition to arousing public attention, offer ideas for scientific studies on the state of health of cetaceans and on the impact of currents and environmental factors.
Arpat and local authorities work to collect useful information for the management of any other similar episodes, trying to minimize the risk of contamination and attraction of predators along the coast. The phenomenon of beached cetaceans, albeit rare, represents a challenge for coastal authorities and environmental bodies, which must balance public safety with the protection of marine fauna and the responsible management of these large animals.
