With the start of the new school year, many Italian schools have decided to put order on the clothing front by spreading circular and brochures. The prohibitions, collected by School horizonThey range from the skirts too short to the discovered addoms, from the hats in the classroom to excessively long nails, to shoes such as flip flops and wedges or to the always discussed torn jeans.
The objective declared by school managers is to guarantee an environment adequate for the educational context. An example comes from a high school in Taormina, where the principal has made an illustrated booklet printed with images of the admitted outfits and those that involve the removal from school.
The debate between the principals
According to Mario Rusconi, president of the National Association of Rome, it is not a question of imposing a “dress code”, as to recall common sense:
School is a sacred place, which must have its own liturgy. Nobody would go to a wedding dressed as a lifeguard, in the same way it is not clear why you should present yourself with inadequate clothes at school.
Other managers, such as the vice -president of Manageriscuola Roberto Mugnai, however invite to avoid decisions fallen from above, preferring a comparison with students and families. For its part, Codacons sides against these provisions, believing that they risk limiting personal freedom and making school life even more bureaucratic.
The most frequent prohibitions
The restrictions affect the girls in particular: short tops, minimal tank tops, shoulders and bacon uncovered, too short pants or jeans with tears. There is no lack of generic rules that prohibit looks defined as “rude” or “distractive”. The accessories also end up in the sights: fake nails, showy makeup, multiple piercing and colored hair. In some cases it is even “recommended” to tie the hair if too long.
For boys, attention is mainly paid to beards: they must not be long, uncultivated or with particular designs. According to estimates, about 1 institute out of 5 includes at least one of these rules in its internal regulation.
