Every year on the Australian streets thousands of kangaroos lose their lives in accidents with cars. And even when an animal is struck but he manages to jump away, he almost never means that he is fine. Often he only moves away to hide and face, in solitude, a slow and painful death. It is a little told, but sadly common.
At the beginning of September, an episode that took place along Lanyon Drive in the New South Wales showed how heartbreaking these situations can be. In fact, a motorist hit a kangaroo female without stopping or asking for help. The animal, seriously injured, sought refuge in the soft grass of a cemetery.
The desperate attempt of the partner to revive it
Next to her, her partner desperately tried to revive her, shaking her and trying to get her raised. A moving scene that demonstrates how much the kangaroos also experience strong and profound social ties. In the mother’s pounding, a puppy was listed miraculously alive despite the impact.
Only when a careful passing called the Wildcare Association, a volunteer was able to intervene to give rescue. Unfortunately, for the mother there was nothing more to do, but the baby was saved and entrusted to the necessary care.

A problem widespread on the Australian roads
Road accidents involving kangaroos are not rare: associations estimate that up to 20,000 animals are invested every year. The urban areas that expand and the increasingly intense traffic increase the risks for local fauna. For this reason, the authorities and voluntary organizations invite anyone who affects an animal not to ignore the incident but to contact the rescue immediately, so as to reduce suffering and, in many cases, save the little ones present in the pounding.
This episode reminds us of all how important it is to drive carefully in the areas frequented by wildlife and act with responsibility in the event of an accident. For a motorist it may seem a negligible detail, but for the life of an animal the difference between stopping or going can be enormous. And there is always a message that should arrive strong: respecting wild life means respecting the land that we all share.
