In Sweden you can stay for free in a cabin in the woods, on one condition: stay silent in nature

In the heart of southern Sweden, the region of Skåne launches an unusual tourism project: it’s called Stay Quiet and offers free stays in a stuga, the typical Swedish cabin surrounded by nature, on one condition: don’t make noise.

In fact, a decibel meter monitors the sounds produced by the participants: if the established threshold is exceeded, the stay ends the following morning. An experiment? Yes, but also an invitation to reflect on our relationship with noise, in a world where silence has become a rare luxury.

The sound of silence

Those who arrive in these isolated cabins, among forests, lakes and fjords, discover that the real challenge is not to stay quiet, but to get used to the absence of artificial sounds. At first, for those who live in the city, the quiet can seem like an almost disturbing void, as if someone had pressed “mute” on reality. But a few hours are enough to feel how silence can regenerate mind and body.

The Skåne region accompanies the experience with a Map of Quietude, a map of the places with the lowest level of noise pollution. Here, silence is not just an aesthetic value: it is natural therapy, useful for reducing stress, blood pressure and heart rate.

Silence as a new form of luxury

The project, conceived by Visit Skåne, was born with a double objective: to promote sustainable tourism and raise awareness of the issue of noise as a form of pollution. Each guest receives a personalized report of the “acoustic landscape” they have experienced: a reverse playlist, made up of what they have not heard.

During your stay, the days pass slowly between swimming in the forest, evening walks and cooking on the open fire, all strictly without screens or distractions. Registration for autumn 2025 is already closed, but the project will return. And it’s not difficult to understand why: in an age that prizes constant connection, Stay Quiet offers the opposite experience: that of noise fading and the self finally being heard.
