The best spas at (almost) zero cost a stone’s throw from Rome: the fifth one is a real gem

With the arrival of autumn, few pleasures equal that of immersing yourself in the warm waters of a natural spring. Lazio, with its thousand-year history and variety of landscapes, is one of the richest regions of spas in Italy — many of which are located less than two hours from Rome. From free springs immersed in nature to historic spa centers, each place tells a fragment of ancient civilization and offers an authentic way of taking care of yourself.

Ficoncella thermal baths – Civitavecchia (about 70 km from Rome)

The Ficoncella thermal baths, a few minutes from Civitavecchia, are among the oldest and most popular in Lazio. Five natural pools, carved into the rock and fed by sulphate-calcium waters that oscillate between 30 and 56 °C, offer an experience of authentic well-being. Already frequented by the Etruscans and Romans, they were also a destination for Garibaldi, who found relief there after a wound. The waters, known for their healing and anti-inflammatory properties, are particularly effective against dermatitis, arthritis and respiratory problems. Accessible all year round, the spa maintains a very low entrance fee and can also be easily reached by car.

Tuscia Terme – Viterbo (about 90 km from Rome)

thermal park

In the heart of Tuscia, among the hills surrounding Viterbo, Tuscia Terme is born, a new thermal park designed for those seeking relaxation and regeneration in a natural and well-kept context. After twenty-two years of waiting, the former Terme di Paliano finally opens its doors, with five thermal pools and modern services designed to guarantee an authentic but accessible wellness experience. The structure, more intimate than the original project, focuses on quality and hospitality, filling the void left by the closure of the historic Masse di San Sisto and Bagnaccio. Located along the Cassia Sud, at kilometer 74, the park is easily reachable from Rome in about an hour and a half. Entrance costs 12 euros on weekdays and 18 on holidays, with access allowed only to adults. Open every day from 9am to 7pm, Tuscia Terme is a candidate to become the new thermal oasis of Lazio.

Terme del Bullicame – Viterbo (about 90 km from Rome)

bullicame spa

North of the capital, the Bullicame Baths are one of the most famous places in Tuscia. The sulphurous waters, which flow at around 58°C, create a surreal landscape of vapors and bubbling pools, so much so that Dante mentioned them in Divine Comedy. The therapeutic properties are many: they improve circulation, relieve joint pain and promote healthy skin. There are two main pools, one round and one elongated, accessible for free. The area is open every day and especially recommended in autumn and winter, when the foggy atmosphere enhances the magic of the place.

Piscine Carletti – Viterbo (about 90 km from Rome)

Carletti swimming pools

Also near Viterbo, the Carletti Pools offer a totally free and natural spa experience. The springs, with waters reaching 60°C, create pools of different temperatures thanks to natural cooling, allowing you to choose the most welcome level of heat. Here there are no facilities or services: you bring your towel, find your own pool and let yourself be enveloped by the steam. The Carletti are also open at night and, thanks to the continuous exchange of water, they remain clean and pleasant all year round. A spartan but authentic place, perfect for those seeking silence and freedom.

Terme del Bagnaccio – Viterbo (about 95 km from Rome)

Bagnaccio spa

Just outside the center of Viterbo, along the Via Francigena, are the Terme del Bagnaccio, perhaps the most iconic spa site in Tuscia. Its five pools, with waters reaching 63°C at the source, offer a complete experience: hot baths, natural vapors and a rural landscape that preserves the Etruscan-Roman atmosphere. The sulphate-bicarbonate-alkaline-earthy waters have beneficial effects on the skin, joints and respiratory system. Every night the tanks are emptied and refilled with spring water, ensuring constant cleaning. Access is managed by a private association and the daily ticket on weekends costs 10 euros. A small spa paradise less than two hours from the capital.

Terme di Suio – Castelforte (about 160 km from Rome)

suio spa

The Terme di Suio are located in the hills of Castelforte, in lower Lazio, and represent one of the oldest spa areas in the region. The sulphurous and iodine waters, with temperatures ranging from 0 to 60 °C, were already known in Roman times as Aquae Vescinae. Today the area is dotted with natural springs and establishments, including the Terme Sant’Egidio, which offers a 25,000 m2 spa park with eleven natural pools overlooking the Garigliano river. The waters promote muscular, respiratory and skin well-being, while the authentic and non-touristy atmosphere makes it an ideal destination for those seeking relaxation at reasonable costs.

Terme di Stigliano – Canale Monterano (about 60 km from Rome)

Stigliano spa

North-west of Rome, immersed in the countryside between Bracciano and Tolfa, the Terme di Stigliano represent one of the most fascinating spa experiences in Lazio. The springs, already known by the Etruscans and Romans, flow at temperatures between 30 and 38 °C, feeding natural pools and stone basins in a context of absolute peace. The modern structure is an elegant spa that combines well-being and charm, with thermal treatments, saunas and beauty treatments. It does not have an agreement with the NHS, but offers one of the most evocative landscape settings for a regenerating weekend a short distance from the capital.

Thermal Baths of Rome (Acque Albule) – Tivoli (about 35 km from Rome)

tivoli spa

Among the closest to the city, the Tivoli Baths – known since ancient times as Acque Albule — are a timeless classic for the Romans. The sulphurous waters, at a constant temperature of 23°C, were already appreciated by Augustus for their healing properties. Today the establishment offers wellness programs, treatments affiliated with the NHS and a large thermal swimming pool surrounded by greenery. It is the perfect destination for those who want to combine well-being and comfort, thanks to its location that can be easily reached in just half an hour from the capital.

Terme Pompeo – Ferentino (about 80 km from Rome)

In the Sacco Valley, between Rome and Frosinone, the Terme Pompeo combine tradition and medicine. Sulphurous waters, used for baths, muds and inhalations, are particularly suitable for respiratory and joint problems. The family-run establishment has an agreement with the NHS and combines the healthcare part with a modern wellness centre. The thermal mud, naturally matured for months, is among the most effective in Lazio. The strategic position, close to the Rome–Naples motorway, makes it a convenient destination for a weekend of health and relaxation.

Thermal baths of Fiuggi – Fiuggi (about 90 km from Rome)

spa of fiuggi

Different from the others, Fiuggi is the city of drinking water. Its mineral springs, famous since the Middle Ages, are used for kidney purification and the prevention of stones. Here the thermal treatment is not made up of immersions but of hydroponic courses, which involve the daily intake of water from the two main sources: Bonifacio VIII and Anticolana. Both have an agreement with the NHS and are set in a green and relaxing context, ideal for those seeking regeneration from within.

The spas of Lazio offer a wide choice of hot waters and purifying springs, between freedom and comfort. The closest to Rome are Tivoli and Stigliano, perfect for a half-day escape; Viterbo and Fiuggi remain the ideal destinations for a complete weekend; Suio and Ferentino for those seeking a healing and authentic experience. Less than two hours from the capital, well-being is truly within reach.
