In the years in which he led Amazon, Jeff Bezos made some decidedly unconventional selection techniques famous. Among these, a seemingly simple question stands out but which has confused more than one candidate: “Are you a lucky person? Not a psychological game, but a way to understand the attitude with which a person faces life.
For Bezos, recognizing the component of chance in one’s successes is not fragility, but a sign of humility, gratitude and that optimistic vision that allows you to seize an opportunity and transform it into something greater. According to Dan Rose, a former Amazon executive, the question served to identify those who did not attribute everything to personal talent, but were able to see favorable circumstances as a springboard. A significant detail in a company where the ability to observe and learn is considered as valuable as technical competence.
The question of what the candidate had invented
The question about luck wasn’t the only twist in the talks. In fact, Bezos also liked to ask for a concrete example of something the candidate had invented. A useful exercise to evaluate creativity, autonomy and the ability to solve problems without pre-packaged instructions. It was therefore not a question of finding the idea of the century, but of showing the aptitude to explore, experiment and improve what exists.
This philosophy was not reserved for the American headquarters: the same questions were also asked in the European selections. The testimony of those who worked for Amazon confirms that the culture established by the founder, based on courage and curiosity, has become part of the company’s DNA.
The underlying belief is always the same: innovation arises where there is freedom to try, make mistakes and try again. In short, in Bezos’ talks, what matters more than perfection is the spirit of initiative and the ability to transform a stumble into an opportunity. A lesson that survives today, in the era of artificial intelligence, where those who know how to reinvent themselves have a decisive advantage.
When I worked at Amazon 1999-2006, Jeff Bezos’ favorite interview question was “are you a lucky person?” What a great way to filter for optimists and people who manifest success.
