Researchers have reconstructed how the “hobbits” became extinct, more than 50,000 years ago (and the role played by climate change)

We know that he lived for over a million years on the volcanic island of Flores, Indonesia. We know that he made stone tools despite having a very small brain. We even know that he was perfectly adapted to a difficult environment, far from everything. What we didn’t know, until today, was because it suddenly disappeared about 50,000 years ago.

New research published in Communications Earth & Environment puts this irregular puzzle in order and suggests that the answer should not be sought in a single, sudden event, but in a long series of climatic transformations that have eroded, season after season, the chances of survival of these hominids.

The result is a fascinating and disturbing story at the same time: a world that shrinks, the water decreases, the prey disappears, and a group of small humans forced to abandon their home, perhaps just as our modern ancestors, the Homo sapienswere starting to appear on the island.

The crazy rains of Flores and the slow disappearance of the hobbits

To understand what happened, scientists started from a place that was almost poetic in its simplicity: a stalagmite that grew in the depths of the Liang Luar cave, a few hundred meters above Liang Bua, the archaeological cradle of the hobbits. Each layer of the stalagmite is a kind of natural diary page, written by the water that drips from the ceiling and traps clues to the external climate within it.

By analyzing those tiny chemical changes, researchers understood how rainfall varied during the last ice age. A surprisingly dynamic picture emerges: a very humid period between 91,000 and 76,000 years ago; a long, more unstable and seasonal interval up to 61,000 years ago; then, like a door slowly closing, one increasing and persistent droughtsimilar to that which today characterizes the driest areas of eastern Australia.

This final phase appears to have worked like an ecological funnel. The small Wae Racang river, vital during the dry season, may have shrunk to the point of almost disappearing. The vegetation, under water stress, would have reduced the availability of food. They Stegodon pygmiesthe miniature elephants that were the hobbits’ main source of meat would have sought relief elsewhere.

When the elephants left, the hobbits followed. Liang Bua, which had hosted these communities for almost 140,000 years, begins to slowly empty.

To confirm this combination of causes, the team also analyzed the enamel of the Stegodon fossil teeth, recovered in increasingly deeper layers of the cave. Their isotopic values ​​coincided with those of the stalagmite. It wasn’t just a coincidence: it was a perfectly synchronized climate symphony, in which every component of the ecosystem was reacting to the same change.

90% of Stegodon remains date back to the most favorable period, the “Goldilocks”, between 76,000 and 61,000 years ago. When the rains decreased, they also decreased. The hobbits, deprived of their essential resources, would have suffered the same fate.

On the surface, meanwhile, the earth changed shape, cracked and became less and less hospitable. A small island can be a fortress, but also a trap.

The ash, the sapiens and the last page of history

There is a point in the stratigraphy of Liang Bua that almost seems like the final curtain of a tragedy: a thick layer of volcanic ash deposited about 50,000 years ago. above the last tools and the last remains of Stegodon. We don’t know if that ash accelerated the extinction; he certainly tells it.

Soon after, the first signs of Homo sapiens appear. It is possible that the two groups never met, but it is equally possible that the exchange took place. And in that case, disease, competition or simply the greater flexibility of sapiens could have completed a process already underway.

The new study doesn’t close the mystery, but it finally gives us a solid context in which to place it. And above all it reminds us how much human survival, whatever the species, depends on something fragile, essential and anything but obvious: the water. The fate of the hobbits is not an ancient fairy tale. It’s a story that also talks about us.
