Party time, an odyssey that begins for those away from home. Precisely for this reason, the Sicilia Express doubles its routes to allow Sicilians living in the North to return home during the Christmas holidays. The measure was created in response to the growing demand of travelers and the expensive flights, guaranteeing a comfortable, safe and economical option to reunite with their families.
For the outward journey from Turin, two dates are scheduled: 20 and 27 December 2025, while for the return from Sicily the trains will depart on 5 and 10 January 2026. Each convoy will be able to accommodate approximately 1100 passengers, with fares between 24.90 and 29.90 euros, tickets available from Saturday 13 December 2025 on the website www.fstrenituristici.it and through all channels Trenitalia, including apps, ticket offices and self-service at the station.

Not just a trip
In addition to being a means of transport, traveling with the Sicilia Express is an experiential journey. During the journey, passengers will be able to watch live musical entertainment, taste typical Sicilian products and take part in social gatherings. Among the musical guests expected are the singer Lello Analfino and the young Sicilian tenor Alberto Urso, winner of the talent show Friendswhich will offer performances and master classes related to the world of wine and typical desserts.
The train connects Turin to the main Sicilian cities, with a section from Messina that divides towards Syracuse and central Palermo, and vice versa. The initiative is part of the broader regional mobility relaunch plan, aimed at improving the island’s connections and strengthening services for citizens and tourists.

The problem of connections between North and South cannot be solved
The President of the Region Renato Schifani underlined how the project represents not only an organizational success, but also a symbol of attention to Sicilians wherever they live. The councilor for Infrastructure and Mobility, Alessandro Aricò, also highlighted the importance of the service.
However, despite the doubling of trips, the Sicilia Express remains a temporary and limited intervention. However, the number of trains available is low and the service only covers some specific dates, leaving periods of high demand uncovered such as the period immediately before or after the holidays.
Furthermore, the measure does not address the broader problem of regional mobility in Sicily, characterized by often slow and infrequent rail connections with Sicilians too often forced to take flights at very high prices – or stopovers abroad to save money – in order to spend a few hours in the company of their loved ones.
In fact, therefore, the much-celebrated Sicilia Express does not change the infrastructural disparities between Northern and Southern Italy. It remains a partial remedy, useful only for specific periods and for a limited audience of users. And so we are surprised if true Sicilians like Ficarra and Picone have “borrowed” the name of this train to make fun, in their own way, about all this in their latest Netflix TV series.
