From 2026, Spain is preparing to revolutionize the way of traveling on public transport. The government led by Pedro Sánchez has announced the introduction of a single national pass that will allow you to travel throughout the country with a fixed monthly fee. The cost will be 60 euros per month for the general population, while young people under 26 will be able to access the service with a reduced rate of 30 euros. The entry into force is scheduled for the second half of January.
What does the single ticket include?
The new pass will allow you to use subways, commuter trains (Cercanías), Media Distancia and state buses nationwide. High Speed services (AVE) and Long Distance lines are excluded, at least in the initial phase. Despite these limitations, the measure represents a structural change, eliminating the tariff fragmentation that has always characterized the Spanish transport system.
Sustainable mobility and economic savings
The declared objective of the executive is twofold: on the one hand to reduce transport costs for families, students and workers, on the other to encourage the use of public transport to the detriment of private cars. According to government estimates, the new subscription could guarantee savings of up to 60% on travel costs for a significant portion of regular users, with direct benefits on disposable income and environmental impact.
An integrated system on the European model
The project aims to build an integrated mobility platform, to which regional and municipal networks could also progressively join. If integration is complete, Spain could move closer to models already successfully tested in Europe, such as the German one, which has demonstrated how a simple and accessible fare can promote territorial cohesion and the use of collective transport.
The Madrid case and future challenges
In large cities, such as Madrid, where monthly passes with dedicated fare zones and discounts already exist, it will be necessary to coordinate the new national ticket with the local systems. The regional authorities will have to negotiate the membership methods, evaluating whether to extend the benefits to extra-urban travel as well. In any case, the announcement marks the beginning of a phase in which moving between cities and regions could become easier, cheaper and more uniform.
A measure with a strong social impact
Presented as a structural intervention, the national pass aims to impact the mobility habits of Spaniards and strengthen the role of public transport as an essential service. In a context of economic and social pressures, the single ticket presents itself as a concrete tool to improve accessibility and the quality of daily life.
