A Carabinieri operation against drug trafficking in the countryside on the outskirts of Foggia has revealed a scenario that goes beyond drug-related crime. While executing precautionary custody orders against 24 people, the military came across a wild wolf locked inside a cage. A completely unexpected discovery, which occurred in a rural context and can be traced back, according to initial investigations, to one of the arrested people.
The intervention of specialized units
After the discovery, the Forestry Carabinieri of the NIPAAF, a department specialized in the protection of the environment and protected fauna, intervened on site, together with the veterinarians of the ASL of Foggia who checked the health conditions of the animal and ascertained the methods of its detention. The wolf, a species protected by Italian and European legislation, cannot be detained by private individuals in any ordinary circumstance, making the case also relevant from a criminal point of view.
The future of the animal
The wolf will be transferred to a wildlife rehabilitation center, where it will undergo thorough clinical checks. Specialized veterinarians and biologists operate in these structures, tasked with establishing whether the animal retains the behavioral characteristics necessary for a possible return to nature. The hope is that, after the necessary care, the animal can return to live in its habitat. A decisive aspect will be to understand how long the wolf had been in captivity and whether it was taken when it was still a puppy, a factor that could compromise its autonomy in freedom.
A protected species and a submerged phenomenon
In Italy, despite recent discussions on protection status, the wolf remains a protected species. His capture and illegal detention is a serious crime. Episodes like the one in Foggia highlight an often hidden phenomenon: the illegal trafficking of wild animals, sometimes linked to other criminal activities such as drug trafficking and the arms trade. Animals held as symbols of power or for simple display end up suffering physical and psychological damage that is difficult to reverse.
