The southernmost marathon in the world

The Antarctic Ice Marathon is considered one of the toughest races in the world. Recognized by Guinness World Records as the southernmost marathon on Earth, it takes place at Union Glacier, approximately 965 km from the South Pole. Here the athletes face a 42.2 kilometer route on compact snow and unstable surfaces, with temperatures dropping to -15 degrees Celsius, very strong winds and an even more intense feeling of cold.

Catherine Drysdale’s victory

In the 2025 edition, Drysdale crossed the finish line in 3:48:43, leading the entire race field by more than six minutes. Behind him came the Russian Denis Nazarov, second overall, and the Belgian athlete Rune Buyl, third. A result that takes on even greater value if we consider the context: runners from 20 countries competed in one of the most selective endurance tests in existence.

The Australian athlete’s performance was an example of effort management in extreme conditions. Running for almost four hours in intense cold, wind and uneven terrain requires impeccable physical preparation and extraordinary mental strength. Drysdale was able to maintain a constant pace, facing suffering with clarity and concentration.
