They are the undisputed protagonists of our aperitifs, movie nights on the sofa and parties with friends. Yet, as we know, bagged chips are not exactly the ideal ally for our health: rich in fat, salt and calories, they should be consumed in moderation. But let’s face it clearly: resisting temptation is really difficult!
If we really can’t do without them, we can at least choose those with a better (or less worse) composition. Coming to our aid is Altroconsumowhich sifted through the ingredients and nutritional values of over 220 products including classic chips, corn snacks, tortillas and flavored chips.
Today we focus in particular on classic chips.

How the test was conducted
Altroconsumo has developed a unique score to evaluate the composition of food products, based exclusively on the information reported on the label. This is an evaluation that mainly takes into consideration the nutritional values and the list of ingredients.
The evaluation criteria are as follows:
Based on these parameters, each product receives a score from 0 to 100, which is then translated into five bands: Very good (80-100), Good (60-79), Acceptable (40-59), Poor (20-39) and Very poor (0-19).
The products were detected in 10 supermarket and discount chains in June 2025, for a total of over 220 references analyzed in December 2025.
How to choose french fries
Chips, chips and tortillas are a treat to indulge in from time to time, but they are not all the same. Altroconsumo recommends paying attention to the list of ingredients: the best products contain only potatoes, corn, oil and salt, while many flavored or flour-based snacks have additives such as flavor enhancers, colorings and anti-caking agents.
Nutritional values are also important. Salt is often too high, and oil can range from healthier, such as sunflower or corn, to less recommended, such as palm oil, due to its saturated fat content.
Carefully reading labels and nutritional tables allows you to choose a simpler and slightly less unhealthy snack.
