3.8 magnitude earthquake in the Marche region: dozens of tremors during the night

A strong earthquake has interrupted the silence of the night in the Marche region, waking up many residents in the provinces of Macerata and Fermo. The main earthquake, of magnitude 3.8, was recorded in the early hours of the morning, shortly after three, and was clearly felt by the population. The event originated in an area already known for its seismic activity, generating understandable apprehension among citizens.

Epicenter and characteristics of the earthquake

According to data from the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (Ingv), the epicenter was located a few kilometers from the municipalities of Sant’Angelo in Pontano and Penna San Giovanni, in the Macerata area, and not far from Falerone, in the Fermo area. The hypocenter, located about 24 kilometers deep, contributed to making the tremor perceptible over a rather large area, also involving other areas of central Marche.

A long sequence of replies

The earthquake was not an isolated episode. In the same time slot, the area was affected by an intense seismic sequence, with over 30 tremors recorded during the night. Some of these exceeded magnitude 3, including a magnitude 3.1 aftershock that occurred a few minutes after the main event and a further magnitude 3 quake recorded at dawn. This succession of events has kept attention high, especially among those who live in the towns closest to the epicentre.

Fear among residents, but no damage

Many citizens said they were startled awake by a roar and a sudden, brief but decisive movement. There have been numerous reports on official channels and social media, a sign of a distinctly perceived shock. Despite the fear, at the moment there is no damage to people or buildings, nor particularly critical emergency interventions. The checks carried out in the following hours did not highlight any immediate dangerous situations.
