Cinema is not just made up of masterpieces, and for 46 years the Razzie Awards have existed to remind us of this, the famous, feared and sometimes mistreated awards dedicated to the most disappointing films of the season. The 46th edition, which will take place on the evening of March 14, did not discount anyone and announced the nominations, with two titles standing out: the live-action Snow White and The War of the Worlds, both with six nominations. Among the top names that ended up on the blacklist were Natalie Portman and Jared Leto.
The Golden Raspberry Awards: when cinema doesn’t work
The Golden Raspberry Awards – in Italian “Premi raspberry d’oro” – abbreviated to Razzie Awards, are the other side of the coin compared to the Oscars, in which excellence is not celebrated but mediocrity. Born from an intuition of the American journalist John JB Wilson in 1981, the Razzie Awards highlight the film productions that have most disappointed both critics and audiences. The nominations of the 46th edition demonstrate, once again, how even large productions, especially American ones, can fail spectacularly.
Snow White and War of the Worlds: six nominations each
There will be two titles that will compete for the negative record of this edition: the Disney remake of Snow White, which collected six nominations, a number equaled by The War of the Worlds. Both productions evidently presented various critical issues in multiple aspects of filmmaking.
The most disappointing performances: from The Weeknd to Natalie Portman
In the best actor category, the candidacy of singer-songwriter The Weeknd (real name Abel Tesfaye) for Hurry up tomorrow stands out. The ironic aspect? In the film he plays himself, albeit in a version distorted by reality. The film obtained a total of five nominations, a clear sign of numerous critical issues.
Other nominees for Worst Actor include Dave Bautista for In the Lost Lands, Ice Cube for War of the Worlds, Scott Eastwood for Alarum and Jared Leto for Tron: Ares.
On the female front, the candidates for worst actress are Ariana DeBose for Love Hurts, the iconic Natalie Portman for Fountain of Youth and Michelle Yeoh for Star Trek: Section 31.
The couples on the screen who didn’t convince
The “worst screen couple” category is perhaps the funniest. The candidates include the seven artificial dwarfs from the live action Snow White, James Corden and Rihanna for The Smurfs, Ice Cube with his zoom camera in War of the Worlds and, once again, The Weeknd accompanied by “his colossal ego” in Hurry up tomorrow.
