A piece of Naples’ history in smoke, but the Sannazaro Theater is ready to be reborn: fundraising starts after the fire

In there you easily dreamed of becoming an actress as a child. To walk on stage one day, to make people laugh. Inside there the heart beat and the eyes rejoiced. As in every single theater in Naples, let’s be clear.

In there Luisa Conte he brought all the Neapolitanness with an uncommon timing, establishing a special bond with his audience, to whom he always addressed with final lines that recalled those of Scarpetta, gathering laughter all over the scene. Frowning and then waiting for the room to erupt in loud laughter.

In there there was the good and the most popular Naples, there was the centuries-old passion of the Neapolitans of give show. And there “via Chiaia wedding favor” it was just one of those places where you could do it night and day.

Yesterday’s fire is a very serious wound and the damage is enormous: a cultural heritage that – let’s face it – can never be replicated has gone up in smoke (if you only think of the memorabilia that were in the hall, corridors and dressing rooms) and, with it, a piece of history that has seen not only Luisa Conte, but many other names in theater and music, from Eduardo De Filippo to Eleonora Duse to Nino Taranto.

However, in pain and loss, an entire community is coming together to face this loss and work towards rebirth.

Alongside local institutions, the world of culture has already mobilized to contribute to the rebirth of theatre. A proposal has been circulating that has found the support of many: dedicating part of the proceeds of the 2026 Sanremo Festival to the reconstruction of the Sannazaro Theatre, a gesture that would symbolize not only the link between musical and theatrical culture, but also concrete help to the city of Naples in a moment of profound pain.

The Judicial Authority has launched an investigation to understand the causes of the fire, but beyond this, the Neapolitan cultural community and the people who loved this theater have united in a great project of hope.

Fundraising

In a joint note, the Nino Taranto Foundation and the Naples Red Cross have made a dedicated current account available for fundraising at the Iban: It38A0366701600010570206405 reason: together for the Sannazzaro Theaterinviting anyone who wants to participate in the reconstruction to contribute with generosity and a sense of belonging.

The Sannazaro Theater was in fact the scene of memorable events, of great performances that accompanied the history of this city. Today, among the rubble, Neapolitans want to be certain that this place will come back to life stronger than before. Despite the tragedy, Naples is ready to react and rebuild what has been destroyed, not only with bricks and mortar, but with the heart of those who never give up.

The message that comes from Naples is clear: culture, like life, does not go out, even when it seems overwhelmed by fire. The fire took away the memory of a theatre, but not the hope that it can shine again, as a symbol of resistance and pure art.
