Highly tense morning in Rome along the Termini Centocelle line, where two trains collided at Ponte Casilino, a few stops from the Termini terminus. The accident occurred in the section with interpenetrated track, a segment of approximately fifty meters in which trains coming from two directions alternate on the same space.
For reasons yet to be clarified, the vehicles came into contact on the side while traveling in the opposite direction. The collision caused great fear among the passengers on board and passers-by who witnessed the scene. According to initial information, one of the trains had a partial slide off the tracks, but at the moment no injuries have been reported.
Evacuation and service interrupted
Immediately after the impact, the trains remained stuck at the point of the collision, unable to continue. The passengers were let off in an orderly manner and accompanied to the stops of the replacement vehicles. To allow emergency services to intervene and make the area safe, the section was temporarily closed.
Atac has ordered the activation of replacement shuttles, in particular strengthening the 105 bus line to compensate for the interruption of the railway service. Technicians and operators intervened quickly to manage the situation and start recovery operations.
Technical checks and possible causes
It is not yet clear what led to the accident. Investigations are underway to understand whether there was originally a failure in the safety systems, a technical problem on board or on the ground, or a possible human error.
In an official note, Atac explained that the event occurred in the section normally regulated by alternating one-way traffic and communicated the establishment of an internal technical commission responsible for carrying out all the necessary checks. The objective is to precisely reconstruct the dynamics of the facts and identify any responsibilities.
Scary but no one injured
Despite the scare and the unusual scene of the trains stopped and side by side along the tracks, the episode did not cause any physical consequences for the travellers. Everyone was safely evacuated and directed to public surface transport. It now remains to be clarified how it was possible for two trains to be in the same delicate section of the line at the same time. Meanwhile, for commuters from Termini Centocelle, the day turned into an obstacle course between waiting and diversions.
