Find a cassette tape from 1968 with the voices of “grandmother Natalina and grandfather Brando”: the social appeal to find the owner (and the happy ending)

An orange cassette, forgotten on a neighborhood wall, became in a few hours a small story of memory and urban solidarity. It happened in Rome, between via delle Vigne Nuove and via di Villa di Faonte, where a passerby noticed an object that many today would consider simply vintage. But there was something written on the label that changed everything: “Voice of grandmother Natalina and grandfather Brando – 1968Not just any recording, therefore, but a fragment of family life recorded on tape more than half a century ago.

The discovery and the appeal on social media

The woman who found the tape immediately realized that it could be a precious memory for someone. Rather than leave it on the sidewalk, he carefully moved it to a wall to prevent it from being damaged by parked cars. Immediately afterwards he decided to do what has now become the quickest way to send a public message: an appeal on social media.

In the Facebook group of the neighborhood “Montesacro -Talenti (III municipality) Gruppo Aperto – The original” he published the photo of the box and a few lines of explanation, also indicating the exact point of the discovery. The idea was simple but effective: track down the owner of that small family archive.

The tape that holds a story

Audio cassettes, which today have almost disappeared from daily life, for many still represent containers of unrepeatable memories. Before smartphones and digital files, recording a voice meant capturing a moment that often remained treasured for decades. A conversation, a laugh, a message for children or grandchildren.

It is therefore not surprising that that writing – “voice of grandmother Natalina and grandfather Brando” – struck those who read it. Behind that tape there could be the audio testimony of two people who are perhaps no longer with us, but who someone wanted to preserve in the most direct way possible: by recording their voice.

The reaction of the network

The post immediately caught the attention of the group’s users. Messages of nostalgia, curiosity and affection appeared among the comments. There are those who said they still keep old cassettes with their parents’ voices, those who remembered the times of the Walkman and those who confessed how nice it would be to own a similar recording of their grandparents. Many also suggested protecting the tape from rain or storing it until the owner could be found.

The happy ending

The story, fortunately, had a positive epilogue. The woman who had launched the appeal subsequently reassured everyone: the cassette was recovered and carefully preserved. In the meantime, thanks to online word of mouth, the legitimate owner revealed himself in the comments and was tracked down.

And so now that small plastic rectangle, engraved in 1968, will soon return to the hands of the person who lost it. And with him the voices of grandmother Natalina and grandfather Brando will also return, having remained silent for years but ready, perhaps, to be heard once again.
