I’ll take you to Belcastro, the Calabrian village where fairy tales come to life (thanks to splendid murals)

In the heart of Calabria, in the province of Catanzaro, the small village of Belcastro has chosen to transform itself into a real open-air tunnel. Walking through the alleys, visitors find themselves immersed in a fairy-tale world, where the walls of the houses tell timeless stories. Rainbows, murals and bright colors give life to characters we all know: from Alice in Wonderland to the anxious White Rabbit, passing through Pinocchio in all its versions, from the classic cartoon to the book by Carlo Collodi.

Behind this metamorphosis there is the talent of the young artist Matteo Lupia, who chose to give shape to fairy tales along the streets of Belcastro, making the village itself the protagonist of the stories. Each mural is a small journey: visitors can almost walk next to the characters and experience the fairy tales as if they were real.

A visual and narrative experience

Each work is designed to tell a story and stimulate the imagination. The alleys of the village are in fact home to iconic but also less recommendable characters, such as Mangiafuoco, the Cat and the Fox or the gigantic whale, all inserted in narrative contexts that intrigue adults and children alike.

The staircase decorated with a rainbow is a detail that symbolically guides visitors, accompanying them on their walk through colors and fantastic adventures. Belcastro’s artistic project demonstrates how urban art can not only beautify a place, but also enhance it culturally and touristically, offering an immersive experience that blends fantasy and territory.

What to see in Belcastro

But Belcastro is not just a fairytale village: it preserves a significant historical heritage, such as the Norman castle which dominates the panorama and represents a point of reference for the community. It is also the birthplace of Saint Thomas Aquinas, one more reason to visit the village. Events such as “Natale nel Borgo delle Favole” and other cultural initiatives have also consolidated the link between art and territory, attracting visitors and promoting cultural tourism. Thanks to this synergy between tradition and innovation, Belcastro has become a place to dream, walking among stories and colors that transform reality into a real fairy tale.
