In the Alsatian village of Moosch, just over 1,500 inhabitants, the discussion about a possible reduction in school classes has turned into a national case. The problem arises from the fact that the number of students enrolled is not enough to guarantee the maintenance of all sections of the nursery and primary school, with the real risk of closure.
To avoid this consequence, the local community chose an unexpected path: transforming the protest into a public, ironic and highly symbolic gesture. A response that is not limited to reporting, but aims to attract media and institutional attention. What did they do? Simple, they enrolled five cows in the town’s nursery school.
The “new students” are called Arlette, Abondance and Amandine
The animals, called Arlette, Abondance, Amsel, Amandine and Abeille, were placed in an enclosure set up in front of the institute, becoming in effect the symbol of the protest. Their names were entered on an official registration form, delivered to the school. The cows belong to a local breeder, already involved in the municipal administration.
Behind the initiative is the mayor José Schruoffeneger, a former teacher, who transformed an idea born almost for fun into a form of political communication. The declared objective is to highlight the difficulties of small municipalities, often penalized by rigid numerical criteria that do not take into account the local demographic reality.
From the local provocation to the national media case
What should have remained a local protest quickly turned into a viral phenomenon, gaining space in the French media and on social networks, until it became a national case. And in the end the story of the “pupil” cows went beyond the borders of France, also landing in foreign media.
Now the community’s objective is clear: to exploit the visibility obtained to push the authorities to reconsider the decision on cutting the class. In the meantime, the five protagonists of the protest continue to occupy their place in front of the school, having become the symbol of a battle that combines irony, local identity and defense of the right to education.
