Last night via Cristoforo Colombo, one of the best known and busiest expressways in Rome, was “invaded” by a herd of horses, the one “recruited” for the traditional Republic Day parade, scheduled for June 2nd. Tragedy, fortunately only touched upon, which however rekindles the debate on the use of animals for recreational purposes.

The video goes crazy on social media, also posted by the Instagram page of Rome’s night taxi drivers, known for publishing rather surreal images and footage of what happens in the capital when many of us are asleep.
The comments are of all kinds, from ironic to very worried, because yes, anything could really happen, even very serious accidents: in fact it wasn’t even the middle of the night, everything happened between 11.30pm and midnight on May 29-30, a Friday evening, as traffic in Rome is generally still heavy, especially on weekends.
It is not the first time that episodes of this type have happened: horses used for parades (as well as for races), lions, camels and elephants for circuses, which escape from places that do not belong to any of them, in search of denied freedom.
Beyond the easy irony, we ask ourselves – as always – why man continues to use animals for recreational purposes.
