Anyone who walks in the woods knows this: the walk often ends with a small ritual inspection. Socks, ankles, calves, trouser creases, dog fur. The ticks they don’t make any noise, they are almost never seen as they arrive, they don’t even give that immediate mosquito satisfaction that at least you hear it buzzing and can hate it with precision. They stay low, among grass, leaves, twigs, damp edges of paths. They wait for something warm, alive, possibly distracted to pass by.
This is why prevention is always explained in the same way: wear light-coloured clothing, cover your legs, use repellents, stay in the center of the paths, check yourself carefully on the way back. All sacrosanct. Except that a study conducted in the woods of the Ottawa Greenbelt, the green belt surrounding the Canadian capital, adds a very practical detail: even the path can be designed better. And sometimes a simple thing is enough, almost banal to see, like a band of wood chips at the sides of the path.
The research, published on Ticks and Tick-borne Diseasesfollowed twenty sections of trail approximately 50 meters long for two summers. Some were left as they were, others were edged with natural wood chips, still others with wood chips treated with deltamethrin, a substance used against ticks and mites. The strongest result concerns precisely this last solution: in the sections with treated wood chips, the presence of adult ticks and nymphs dropped by 99%. Natural wood chips, without chemical treatment, however reduced ticks by approximately half.

The interesting thing is that we are not talking about a futuristic, expensive or technology-filled intervention. No drones, sensors, apps or conference promises. We are talking about shredded wood placed along the edge of the path. A rough, dry, inconspicuous stripe. Yet, at that precise point, it can change a lot.
Ticks don’t chase passers-by. They don’t jump at you like little horror movie monsters, even if that’s sometimes the psychological effect. They climb onto blades of grass, low leaves or twigs and stay there, waiting. When an animal, a hiker, a dog or an exposed leg passes by, they lock on. It’s their job. Wood chips work because they make the grassy edge where ticks lurk less favorable. It reduces low vegetation, dries the margin, creates a less comfortable strip for them.
During the monitoring the researchers collected 440 mints. Out of 293 specimens analyzed, approximately one third tested positive for Borrelia burgdorferithe bacterium associated with Lyme disease in North America. A fact that explains why the experiment was taken seriously: in that area the presence of infected ticks is already a concrete problem, not a theoretical nuisance from a sign at the park entrance.
99% are good reads
The number is impressive, of course. Reduce ticks by 99% along a popular trail is a huge achievement. However, it must be kept with its feet on the ground, because the part treated with deltamethrin brings with it environmental questions that cannot be avoided with a shrug of the shoulders.
Deltamethrin is effective, and for this reason it should be used with caution. The study itself highlights questions that are still open: possible effects on soil organisms, on insects that live among the leaves, on areas close to water, on the tiny life that lives right there where we only see the “edge of the path”. In a park, every intervention must take into account the context: how many people pass by, how high the risk of ticks is, how close a wetland is, what type of fauna lives in that area, what maintenance is already done.
For this reason the data on natural wood chips is perhaps less spectacular, but very interesting. Cutting the ticks by about half using only woody material, perhaps obtained from normal tree maintenance, opens up a simpler possibility to imagine elsewhere too. Very popular paths, peri-urban green areas, parks where dogs are taken, paths used by families and schools: places where more careful management of the edges could reduce the risk without transforming the forest into an open-air chemical laboratory.
Because it interests us too
The study concerns Canada and a tick species typical of eastern North America, Ixodes scapularis. In Italy and in much of Europe the most common reference is Ixodes ricinusthe woodland tick. The context changes, but we know the scene well here too: tall grass, undergrowth, narrow paths, poorly maintained edges, wild animals, dogs sticking their muzzles everywhere and people who discover a tiny puncture upon returning.
The Istituto Superiore di Sanità recalls that ticks are also present in our country, especially in environments rich in vegetation, shrubs and undergrowth, but they can also be found in parks and urban green areas. The sting is often painless, so noticing it immediately is not a given. For this reason, the simplest gestures remain fundamental: walking in the center of the paths, avoiding direct contact with tall grass and bushes, using appropriate clothing in risk areas, checking your skin and clothes upon returning, removing any ticks in the correct way.
The novelty, however, is in the look. So far we have put almost all the burden of prevention on people: check yourself, dress better, spray yourself with repellent, look at the dog, look at the children, even look at the fixed thought that your leg itches even when you have nothing. This study says that part of the work can also be in managing the paths. In the edges. In maintenance. In that lateral band that we usually only notice when we scratch our ankle.
It doesn’t mean covering every forest with treated wood chips. That would be a stupid shortcut. Rather, it means starting to think about paths as places to be designed also with a view to public health, especially where the risk is already known. Natural wood chips alone do not eliminate the problem. But he can lower it. Treated wood chips seem much more potent, but require serious site-by-site environmental assessments.
Ticks will continue to tick. We will continue to check ourselves after a walk, because that remains one of the most useful habits. But there is something very concrete in this research: sometimes prevention does not take the form of a great plan, nor of a new technology. Sometimes it is a strip of wood on the side of a path. It’s there, it doesn’t promise miracles, it doesn’t make a scene. And in the meantime he works.
