Sleep, however, continues to do its own thing. We fall asleep late, we wake up at 4.17 with the tragic clarity of someone who has to review their entire life, then in the morning the body remains glued to the mattress as if the night had left the job half done.
In this space, now crowded with smartwatches, rings, apps, clever mattresses and more or less sensible advice, also arrives Sunflower The project was launched on Kickstarter, with a campaign dedicated to those who want to support the first production.
Sleep “read” from the bedside table
The most curious promise of Sunflower No bracelet, no ring, no band, no object to remember to charge before sleeping. The lamp uses a 60 GHz millimeter radar, designed to detect micro-movements, breathing and position changes during the night. The promotional material talks about up to 200,000 readings per night, a number to be taken for what it is: a figure declared by the manufacturer, interesting, very spectacular, yet to be measured in daily use by real people, with cats climbing onto the bed, partners turning over like washing machines in the centrifuge and blankets thrown everywhere.

The fake dawn, done well
Once the most suitable window has been identified, Sunflower X starts a sunrise simulation. The light grows gradually, starting from a very low brightness and arriving at a lighter white, designed to accompany the transition from sleep to wakefulness. If necessary, natural sounds or soft noises also enter, with a logic closer to transition than to tearing.
The mechanism is simple to understand even without falling in love with yet another tech acronym: the traditional alarm clock rings at a fixed time, period. Sunflower The difference is all there. Instead of the usual trill that pulls you out of sleep with the grace of a bucket of water, a light arrives that slowly increases and tries to carry the body towards the morning with less friction.
The lamp also has an adjustable light ring, designed to adapt to reading, relaxation and evening use. It can serve as a bedside light, a light for reading without disturbing too much, a soft presence in the room. And when it detects that the user has fallen asleep, it can gradually dim the light and interrupt some audio content connected to the smartphone. The scene is quite everyday: podcast left to relax, episode forgotten at minute 12, phone continuing to speak in the dark to a person now elsewhere. An alarm clock that learns
The most ambitious part concerns artificial intelligence. Sunflower Each night should add information to your personal awakening curve, making the experience less and less generic.
The lamp also generates sleep quality reports via the Moonlex app. This detail may appeal to those who love seeing graphs, scores, curves and data. It can become less likable for those who, after a terrible night, would also prefer to avoid the report card of their own psychophysical breakdown. Sleep technology always lives in this strange balance: it helps us understand something, but it also risks transforming rest into another performance to be monitored. Sleeping badly and then reading that you slept badly, complete with a graph, remains a modern form of cruelty.
The manufacturer also imagines a broader ecosystem, capable in the future of connecting light, sound, temperature, humidity and other elements of the room. For now the focus remains this 3-in-1 lamp: bright alarm clock, contactless sleep monitor and bedside assistant. A kind of artificial sunflower that, instead of following the sun, tries to follow our biological rhythm.
Kickstarter and feet on the ground
