From sick child to symbol of hope
Before becoming one of the greatest footballers in history, Lionel Messi was a boy from Rosario who risked seeing his dream end too soon. At just 10 years old he was diagnosed with growth hormone deficiency, a condition that required expensive treatment that his family struggled to afford.
The opportunity that changed his life came in 2000, when Barcelona decided to bet on his talent and cover the costs of the necessary treatment. Without that help, the future world champion’s career might never have taken off.
Perhaps this is also why Messi has never forgotten how important it is to guarantee children access to medical care and growth opportunities. Over the years, alongside his sporting successes, he has built a path of social commitment that today reaches thousands of minors in different parts of the world.
The Leo Messi Foundation and its commitment to children
In 2007 the Argentine champion created the Leo Messi Foundation, with the aim of supporting projects related to the health, education and social inclusion of young people. Through the foundation, health programs, educational initiatives and interventions aimed at children living in vulnerable conditions have been financed.
Since 2010, Messi has also been a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, a role which has led him to support international campaigns dedicated to children’s rights, access to education and the protection of minors affected by war, poverty and natural disasters.
The projects supported by his foundation also include the financing of prefabricated school classrooms in Syria, which have allowed over 1,600 children to return to school after years of conflict.
The large pediatric oncology center in Barcelona
But one of the most significant interventions made by Messi concerns children’s health.
In 2020 the Argentine champion received the Values Award as an international athlete during the Sports Values Gala organized by the newspapers Sport And Prensa Iberica. The award was given to him for his decisive contribution to the creation of the new pediatric oncology center at the Sant Joan de Déu hospital in Barcelona.
According to what was communicated by the organizers of the award and by FC Barcelona, the jury chose Messi for having made possible, through donations from the Leo Messi Foundation, the construction of one of the most important European centers dedicated to the treatment of childhood cancer.
Already in 2019 the foundation had participated in the fundraising which allowed it to exceed the 30 million euros needed for the project. The new center was designed to significantly expand the treatment and research capacity of the Catalan pediatric hospital, an international point of reference for children’s oncology.
Concrete help, not just words
There is no shortage of charitable initiatives in the world of sport, but Messi’s stands out for its continuity over time. From healthcare to education, to programs developed together with UNICEF, his commitment has translated into concrete interventions that have improved the lives of thousands of children.
His story thus takes on a particular meaning: the child who once could not afford the care necessary to grow has become a man who contributes to guaranteeing care, education and opportunities for many other children in the world.
And perhaps this is precisely the most important recognition, far beyond Golden Balls, records and trophies.
