Nature sometimes enjoys rewriting the rigid rules of medical statistics, giving away stories capable of leaving scientists and enthusiasts speechless. In the heart of the suggestive Val di Chiana, in Tuscany, a true biological miracle has taken place which veterinary science classifies as extremely rare.
At the Serristori Equestrian Center, located in the town of Poggio Ciliegio (near the hamlet of Manciano, in the municipality of Castiglion Fiorentino), two twin foals were born. In horses, the chances of a twin pregnancy developing without fatal complications and ending happily with the survival and good health of both newborns are estimated by experts at just 1% of cases. An infinitesimal percentage that transforms this double birth into a triumph of life.

Monitoring in Bologna
The two little horses are called Cosimo and Jole. Before being able to walk on the lawns of the Arezzo riding school, the two foals needed highly specialized care due to the intrinsic complexity of the gestation. For this reason, the last and delicate phase of pregnancy was monitored step by step within the “Giuseppe Gentile” center of excellence, the University Veterinary Hospital of Bologna.
Here, the doctor and specialist Mariella Jole assisted the mare and the newborns, guaranteeing them the necessary therapies to overcome the critical post-partum days. Precisely as a sign of profound gratitude towards the professional who saved her existence, the female filly inherited her name, while the male was baptized Cosimo, an explicit homage to the memory of Count Serristori, the noble benefactor who bequeathed the land on which the equestrian facility stands to the local community.
A sign of destiny for the relaunch of the territory
The enthusiasm for the double bow is sky high among the managers of the Tuscan riding school. The owner of the facility, Chiara Locatelli, did not hide her emotion when she spoke of an exceptional omen for the new management of the recently redeveloped business. Marcello Orlandesi, president of the Ente Serristori (the institution that owns the entire area), also expressed himself along the same lines, underlining how the extraordinary birth gives enormous strategic prestige to the relaunch plan of the equestrian centre.
Now that the period of hospitalization in Emilia is over, Cosimo and Jole are finally ready to make their official return home. To celebrate the event, the center’s management invited citizens to go in person to the riding stables to admire the two lucky little survivors up close.
