A summer night in Salento turned into the scene of a brutal act of gratuitous violence against the local fauna. Around 1.20am on Wednesday 1st July, the port area of Gallipoli became the stage for a cruel act that took the life of a defenseless bird. A group of individuals chose to use a seagull as a living target, repeatedly hitting it with a close-range series of balls and glass bottles, all accompanied by laughter and jeers. The alarm was raised thanks to some reports, prompting the police to intervene immediately to stem the horror.
The soldiers of the Gallipoli Carabinieri company activated the emergency protocols by contacting the provincial delegate of the International Animal Protection Organization, Desirée Martines. Since the latter was about 30 minutes away from the site of the discovery, the timely involvement of the local Oipa coordinator, Sara Mariello, was necessary, who catapulted herself to the site in the middle of the night. The scene that appeared to the rescuers was dramatic, revealing the tragic physical consequences of the attack suffered by the animal on the platform.
The desperate attempt to help by passers-by before his death
Upon arriving on the pier, the volunteer found the bird surrounded by some young passers-by who had decided not to look the other way in the face of so much suffering. These boys had placed a blanket over the animal’s body and had even tried to bathe it in a desperate attempt to revive it and ease its agony. Despite the speed of the rescue chain and the humanity shown by those present, the internal injuries sustained by the seagull proved to be too serious and his heart stopped beating a few moments after the arrival of the zoophilic ambulance.
The dynamics of the event have been partially reconstructed through the first and chilling testimonies collected on site. Some of those present reported having noticed the suspicious movements from afar, without immediately understanding the gravity of the situation, while another citizen confirmed having directly witnessed the violence from atop the city’s historic walls. The details that emerged paint a picture of pure sadism, light years away from a simple adolescent prank, which the association has publicly denounced as a serious danger for the entire community.
The formal complaint and the hunt for security camera images
The Oipa legal office immediately took action to proceed with a regular formal complaint against unknown persons for mistreatment and killing of animals. The leaders of the environmental association have requested formal verification of the presence of public or private video surveillance cameras active in the port area, with the aim of identifying those responsible.
The representatives of the volunteers have launched a heartfelt appeal to the citizens, inviting anyone with video footage, photographs or useful details to come forward to break the wall of silence. The entire affair has raised a deep wave of indignation, pushing institutions and animal rights protectors to demand exemplary punishments for the perpetrators of the crime. The Oipa spokespersons expressed heartfelt thanks to the Carabinieri for their constant and fruitful collaboration in emergencies in the area, while praising the young people who assisted the bird until its last breath.
