The border between the human world and that of wild animals thins in moments of extreme danger, leaving room for gestures of extraordinary empathy. In Oakland, California, firefighters from the E29 team were the protagonists of an unusual and moving rescue that literally captured the attention of millions of users on social networks. Immediately after putting out a violent fire that had engulfed a car in the middle of the road, the firefighters were approached by a pigeon visibly dazed and suffering due to the toxic fumes released by the burning vehicle.
The singular approach of the bird seeking rescue
Instead of fleeing in fear from the din of emergency vehicles and the flashing lights, the small animal walked with an uncertain step right in the direction of the E29 team operators. The firefighters union Oakland Firefighters Local 55 documented the extraordinary moment through a viral video, explaining how the pigeon exhibited all the typical symptoms of severe smoke poisoning. With great sensitivity and without hesitation, one of the firefighters knelt down on the wet asphalt wearing the required equipment and placed a small oxygen mask directly on the bird’s face, allowing it to breathe deeply of the clean air.
An emergency therapy at high emotional altitude
The bird remained surprisingly still and confident for the entire duration of the treatment, spontaneously protruding its beak towards the dispenser to facilitate inhalation of the therapeutic gas. After a few moments of assisted breathing, useful to free the lungs from the carbon residues of the car fire, the pigeon suddenly regained his strength and flew away into the California sky, apparently completely recovered. The clip of the speech quickly surpassed seven million views on Instagram, garnering unanimous praise from users.
