At 12.00 today, Wednesday 29 July 2026, the Ecobonus portal reopened bookings. Anyone who wants to install an LPG or methane system on their car can obtain a 400 or 800 euro discount respectively. The first move, however, leads to the workshop: the request is presented by the installer, while the owner sees the contribution directly on the invoice. For once he can avoid the personal duel with the platform. The Ministry of Business and Made in Italy has allocated 4 million euros for this measure in 2026.
The window concerns interventions carried out from 26 June to 31 December 2026. 10 June is the date of the Prime Ministerial Decree which refinanced the measure; the entry into force, the one that counts for orders, installations and tests, took place on June 26th. The directorial decree of 27 July precisely establishes both deadlines. Previous interventions remain out, even if the system still smells new.
Who can get the 400 or 800 euros
The LPG and methane Ecobonus is aimed at natural and legal persons who install the system on an M1 category car, i.e. a normal car intended for the transport of people, with at least Euro 3 approval. Companies that sell cars of the same category are excluded.
The contribution amounts to 400 euros for LPG and 800 euros for methane. The system must be brand new, belong to a single manufacturer and be equipped with an approval code recognized by Italian legislation or by UN Regulation number 115. Purchase, assembly and testing must refer to the window open from 26 June 2026.
There is another exclusion to check before making the appointment: cars that have already benefited from a previous Ecobonus cannot also receive the retrofit contribution. The verification is carried out through the license plate when entering the reservation.
The question starts from the workshop
The owner chooses the system and turns to an installer who carries out mechanical repairs or repairs of the car’s electrical and fuel systems, according to the Ateco codes indicated by the Ministry. The professional will enter the Ecobonus platform managed by Invitalia, check the availability of the fund and book the contribution.
The request includes the license plate, the current power supply of the car, make, model, environmental class, type of system and price of the intervention. Before the transformation, the vehicle must not already be powered by LPG, methane or a combination that includes one of the two fuels.
The installer applies the discount directly to the invoice, indicating the state contribution and the name of the owner or co-owner of the vehicle. You will then have to upload the required documentation, including order, quote, identity document, registration document before and after the modification and final invoice. The reservation must be completed within 120 days of placing it.
The mechanism continues behind the scenes: the manufacturer of the system reimburses the installer the value of the discount and recovers the sum as a tax credit in the year in which the registration certificate is updated. For the motorist, the procedure ends with a reduced invoice of 400 or 800 euros.
Incentives for vans also reopen
Reservations for the purchase of new commercial vehicles in the N1 and N2 categories also start again today from the same portal. The fund available in 2026 amounts to 40 million euros and is aimed at small and medium-sized businesses that transport goods on their own behalf or on behalf of third parties. Rental companies that allocate the vehicle to an SME in the sector with a contract of at least three years can also access.
The amounts change based on the weight of the vehicle, its fuel consumption and the presence of scrapping. For battery or hydrogen electric vehicles the contribution varies from 2,000 to 20,000 euros; access without scrapping is reserved for these two power supplies. For vehicles with traditional engines, an N1 or N2 approved up to Euro 4 must be delivered and the discount varies from 2,000 to 10,000 euros. Ownership of the new vehicle must be maintained for at least 24 months.
