The heat waves will continue at least until August 15th, high pressure shows no signs of abating. But can we still talk about waves?

We will remain in the grip of the heat until August 15th: the mathematical models are quite clear and indicate a situation of intense heat lasting for at least another week. It now seems difficult to talk about “heat waves”: high pressure remains stable and this is very worrying.

Short-term forecasts

Yes, it’s true, a drop in temperatures was expected this weekend, but only in the North and very slight and not long-lasting. A passage of slightly warmer and more unstable air is crossing part of our country, but will only marginally affect the dominance of the anticyclone.

We cannot therefore speak of a real summer truce, but of a phase in which temperatures will drop by 3-5°C compared to previous peaks, but in the Center and South all this will be even more modest.

In fact, today 8 August and tomorrow 9 the Ministry of Health bulletin foresees 20 cities with a red flag, the maximum alert level.

Medium-long term forecasts

In fact, as the experts explain MeteoRedhigh pressure remains firm in our territory, and this implies that Italy remains in the grip of the heat at least until mid-month, with a possible improvement at the end of August.

In particular, only after August 15th could the situation really improve: longer-term projections suggest that the anticyclone could gradually lose its bite, allowing a more significant temperature drop. But – it is always good to remember – forecasts become more uncertain looking ahead in time.

And no, it’s not just “summer”, it’s a situation that we now struggle to call “anomalous”, given that, in fact, it is a new, worrying reality.
