Ten thousand euro fine, no closed sector. This is the decision of the Serie A sports judge, Gerardo Mastrandrea, on the case that arose at the Allianz Stadium before Juventus-Atalanta. During the minute of silence for Sandro Mazzola, the icon of Inter who passed away at the age of 83, some of the Juventus fans turned their backs on the pitch, causing a wave of indignation.
The provision
The sanction is in the official press release n. 37 of the Lega Serie A, published on 22 September:
Fine of €10,000.00: to the JUVENTUS club for not having, a small number in percentage of supporters crowded in the South 1st tier tribune sector, blatantly respected the minute’s silence ordered by the FIGC; attenuated sanction given the timely formal position taken by the Company regarding the aforementioned deplorable behavior, as well as the dissociation of the rest of the public present at the stadium.
In short, few elements that stood out. The club’s immediate distancing and the reaction of the rest of the stadium played a role in reducing the fine.
Juventus’ response
The “timely position statement” cited by the judge is the note published by the club on the same evening of the match, won 2-0 by the Bianconeri. The title is Respect and sportsmanshipthis is the content:
There is no rivalry that can justify disrespect during a minute’s silence. Honoring the memory and uniting in remembrance during moments of commemoration represents a common responsibility that transcends affiliations and colors.
