508 kilo bull jumps the fence and ends up in the audience: terror at the Murcia bullfight

Moments of true terror were experienced last Sunday 20 September at the Plaza de Toros in Murcia, Spain, during the last day of the Feria Taurina. The unexpected protagonist of the episode was Malacara, an imposing 508 kilo, 4-year-old bull belonging to the Los Espartales breeding farm. The animal, which represented the sixth and final specimen of the day and had been entrusted to the bullfighter on horseback Duarte Fernandes, suddenly changed trajectory during the performance. Instead of charging its opponent, the large animal took a furious run-up and made an impressive leap, leaping over the wooden barrier that delimits the competition ground.

The bull fell directly into the callejón, or the narrow service corridor that separates the fighting field from the first rows of the stands, coming within very close distance of the spectators. In the images captured by amateur videos released on social networks, the general stampede of the public can clearly be seen, forced to quickly seek shelter while the people in the front rows moved away in terror from the trajectory of the beast. The specimen then managed to do an encore shortly afterwards, again jumping the fence at one of the service structures and triggering general panic before being laboriously brought back under control by the cuadrillas.

A dangerous and archaic tradition that shows all its danger

Despite the highly risky dynamics and the minutes of very high tension experienced in the Spanish arena, the accident fortunately ended without any injuries among the spectators or workers. This incredible misadventure, however, offers the opportunity for a profound and inevitable reflection on the very nature of bullfighting, an anachronistic practice that now appears totally archaic and outdated in the modern world.

Staging shows based on the torment of half-ton animals not only constitutes brutal cruelty devoid of any ethical justification, but also represents an intolerable danger for the physical safety of the audience present, of the bullfighters themselves and of the very creatures forced to suffer these violent dynamics. Such events clearly demonstrate that collective security is constantly being sacrificed on the altar of a violent and timeless pastime, confirming the absolute necessity of moving on once and for all.
