An intense storm wave is ready to hit Italy starting tomorrow, Wednesday 15 October. A depression coming from the western Mediterranean, originating near the Balearic Islands, will cross the Tyrrhenian Sea bringing heavy rain, thunderstorms and strong winds. This disturbance, fueled by the contrast between cold air coming from Northern Europe and the still warm waters of the Mediterranean, is expected to be particularly intense over the southern regions and major islands.
The first signs of precipitation will arrive today, especially in Sardinia and Sicily, with isolated phenomena and scattered thunderstorms. However, the most intense disturbances will come to the fore on Wednesday, when the cyclone will settle on the Tyrrhenian Sea, causing strong storm winds with gusts of up to 80-90 km/h. The most affected areas will be Sicily, Sardinia, Calabria, southern Lazio and Basilicata, where storms and accumulations of rain of up to 100 mm in a few hours are expected, equivalent to a month of concentrated rainfall.
Beware of the risk of flash floods
In addition to heavy rain, the cyclone will bring the risk of flooding and flash floods, phenomena already observed in the past in similar conditions. The Tyrrhenian coasts and inland areas subject to slow drainage will be the most at risk, while on the rest of the peninsula the weather should remain more stable and drier until the end of the week. Weather experts underline the need to pay attention and follow updates, as the phenomena can have rapid intensification and significant local impacts.
After the passage of the cyclone, atmospheric conditions should temporarily improve, with wider areas of sunshine, but a new disturbance is expected as early as the weekend. The trajectory of this second wave remains uncertain, with the possibility of the formation of a TLC (Tropical Like Cyclone), a system disturbed by tropical characteristics capable of generating flood rains and violent phenomena on the southern regions and on the major islands.
