In the incessant chaos of Oxford Street, one of London’s busiest arteries, there is a space that completely overturns the concept of a bookshop. It’s called Poetry Pharmacy and it’s a place where poems are not chosen by chance: they are “prescribed” based on the emotional state of those who enter. Anxiety, sadness, loneliness, broken heart: every condition finds an answer in the verses.
The idea comes from the poet Deborah Alma, who imagined poetry as a tool capable of acting on mental well-being with the same immediacy of a pharmacological remedy. It is no coincidence that the environment recalls a real pharmacy: tidy shelves, poetic “remedies” and personalized consultations.

From the “Emergency Poet” to the therapeutic library
Before the London headquarters, the project had already taken shape with Emergency Poet, a vintage ambulance transformed into a traveling poetry clinic. In this medium, Alma took verses to festivals, schools and hospitals, offering “poetic doses” to those going through difficult times.
From that experience the Poetry Pharmacy was born, initially inaugurated in Shropshire and then also landed in the heart of London, within a space linked to the world of wellbeing. Here the books are organized not by author or genre, but by emotion: loss, rebirth, stress, motherhood, friendship.
How a “poetic prescription” works
Entering the Poetry Pharmacy means being welcomed into an environment that invites slowness. The visitor is listened to, guided, and through some questions an emotional profile is built. From there comes the choice of the most suitable poem. The poems are printed, packaged and often accompanied by precise instructions on how to “take them”: in silence, during a walk or in moments of reflection. The goal is not aesthetic, but therapeutic: using words to create immediate relief.

Poetry as a tool for mental well-being
According to Alma, the strength of the project lies in the ability of the verses to reach internal areas that are difficult to express. Poetry becomes a language that not only explains, but welcomes. For this reason it is also used in delicate contexts such as hospitals and end-of-life processes. Many visitors recount personal experiences of transformation: a text received at the right time can reactivate memories, offer consolation or simply restore a sense of emotional presence.
A contemporary refuge in the heart of the city
The Poetry Pharmacy is not just a bookshop, but a cultural experiment that combines literature, psychology and listening. In an era dominated by speed, this space invites us to stop and recognize the value of emotions through the written word. Here poetry is not distant or academic: it is something that you can “take”, carry with you and use as a little daily support. A simple idea that is changing the way many approach reading and, above all, themselves.
