The European cosmetic industry is facing a serious threat: due to a escapade in the EU legislation, many companies risk losing certification cruelty-free. Despite the official prohibitions, some companies are in fact almost obliged to test on animals to comply with the chemical security requirements imposed by the REACH regulation.
The complaint comes from Peta, who launched an urgent appeal to protect decades of battles against animal experimentation. The problem arises from the fact that, in practice, the EU still requires animal tests for some substances used exclusively in cosmetic products, even if these ingredients have a long history of safe use.

Peta USA, which manages the largest program cruelty-free in the world – “Beauty Without Bunnies” – He is now reviewing his own standards. To protect the integrity of the program, only companies that sell in the United States, Canada, Germany or India will be accepted. Companies active only in other countries, including those of the EU, cannot be included in the database until the regulatory problem of the Reach is solved.
Those who do not respect the Cruelty-Free criteria will be moved to the black list of companies that perform animal tests.
The European Commission is ignoring the will of over 1.2 million citizens who have signed an initiative to defend the ban on animal cosmetic tests – said Julia Baines, head of Peta’s scientific policies. Thousands of animals are forced to innovate ingredients in painful and lethal tests, when there are already modern, reliable and totally free animal alternatives.
Peta asks the EU Commission to close the escapade of the Reach and strengthen the existing prohibitions. At the same time, he invites companies to openly oppose any obligation to test on animals and consumers to consult the database Beauty Without Bunnies On Peta.org, which today has over 6,300 brands that reject any form of animal experimentation.
