From 12 October to 3 November, Vallerano is transformed into a stage of ancient traditions and autumn flavours, thanks to the XXII edition of the Chestnut Festival. The appointment with the wonderful village of Tuscia in Viterbo is therefore renewed, famous for its enchanting medieval atmosphere, which this year too will host an event that promises many events. For 4 consecutive weekends, the Chestnut Festival will guarantee over 40 events dedicated to art, culture, gastronomy and, of course, the PDO chestnut, the true queen of the event.
If you participate in the Chestnut Festival you will have a rich and varied program available, capable of involving everyone: you will be able to taste local products, get to know the area closely and participate in many initiatives, made possible by the collaboration with numerous local associations.
The calendar
The first weekend, 12 and 13 October, kicks off the celebrations with a series of activities designed for all ages. On Saturday 12 October, at 11:00, the dancing begins with “Come and discover the sun”, a fascinating solar observation with telescopes, curated by the Gruppo Astrofili Galilei Galilei, which will take place in Piazza dell’Oratorio. In the afternoon, there will be space for popular games in Piazza della Repubblica, where the rural past of the area will come back to life through various recreational activities that will involve adults and children. At 5.30 pm, at the Palazzo della Cultura, a conference will be held which will delve into the history of the chestnut tree in the northern Apennines, offering some more information on extra-regional chestnut cultivation.
But the party doesn’t stop there. Also at 5.30 pm, in Piazza della Repubblica, the “Musici Viatores” will cheer the public with a repertoire that mixes ancient music and popular tradition, in a union that evokes distant eras. The evening will end with a dinner in the traditional tufaceous cellars of Vallerano, where it will be possible to taste typical dishes, followed by a DJ set that will liven up the night.
On Sunday 13 October, Piazza San Vittore will be the theater of ancient wooden games, a return to the simple but timeless pastimes that entertain children and adults. In the same morning, visitors will be able to participate in the pressing of the grapes, an experience that recalls the authenticity of the peasant world, or enjoy a peasant breakfast with the ricotta farmer in Piazza del Casalino. The traditional cellars will be open again for lunch from 12:00, offering the opportunity to savor authentic dishes of Valleranese cuisine.
Sunday afternoon is full of unmissable events: at 3.30pm, in Piazza dell’Oratorio, the show “Little Red Riding Hood with Stralunato” will give the opportunity to attend a retelling of the famous fairy tale, accompanied by the evocative notes of the Orchestralunata, while in Piazza San Vittore, Leonardo Angelucci will perform a live concert. Closing the day, in Piazza della Repubblica, will be the Matrù group from Amatrice, which at 5pm will celebrate popular arts and traditions with a performance full of charm and suggestions.
Furthermore, you can take guided walks among the natural and architectural beauties of Vallerano and its surroundings, go on excursions in the heart of Tuscia, or visit the traveling art exhibitions that will enrich the program.
For art lovers, the “60 per Arte” exhibition will see local artists exhibiting their works in the Palazzo della Cultura and Sala Bigiaretti, adding a touch of creativity to an already extraordinary event, while in Piazza della Repubblica, the most daring will be able to take part in “Venge chi cce ‘cchiappa”, a prize game that tests intuition and readiness, while Largo Trento will host the “Big Trattor” agricultural machinery exhibition, a real party for all ages.
