Fire destroys a barn in the Milan area, firefighters save 510 dairy cows trapped in the flames

Last night a violent storm hit the Milanese area and in all likelihood, even if the circumstances are still being examined by investigators, lightning triggered a fire inside a farm in the hamlet of Cascina Rancate, in the territory of San Giuliano Milanese.

In a few minutes the flames engulfed a large portion of the structure, transforming the barn into a fire front that was difficult to control. The fire affected approximately 1500 square meters of barn, where large quantities of highly flammable fodder were stored. The material fueled the fire, accelerating its spread and making any attempt at immediate containment complex.

Massive intervention by firefighters and animal rescue

Around 60 firefighters with 16 vehicles from Milan and the Lodi area intervened on site. Operations began with an absolute priority: to secure the animals present in the facility. Thanks to a rapid and coordinated intervention, 510 dairy cattle were evacuated and saved before the flames could reach the stables.

A complex operation, made even more delicate by the dense smoke and the structure of the agricultural complex, where corridors and internal spaces required precise maneuvers. The firefighters then concentrated their efforts on attacking the fire directly, trying to contain the barn and prevent the fire from spreading to other parts of the company.

The destroyed barn and the difficult fire extinguishing operations

Despite the timely intervention, the material toll is heavy: a significant part of the structure was destroyed by flames. The roof collapsed in several places and the barn was reduced to a compromised structure, made unstable by the heat and the collapse of the materials.

The operations did not end with the fire being put out. In fact, the longest and most delicate phase followed: the cooling and the “minute shutdown”, necessary to avoid the re-ignition of fires hidden among the hay bales. Even in the following hours some vehicles remained on site to ensure the definitive safety of the area.

Farm safety and vulnerability during extreme events

The episode once again draws attention to the vulnerability of agricultural structures in the event of intense climatic events. In contexts like this, farms can transform (and unfortunately often have transformed) into high-risk environments, where the presence of combustible materials and animals in closed spaces makes every emergency particularly critical. This time, fortunately, the rapid intervention of the Fire Brigade avoided even more serious consequences and the loss of animals but too often they are the ones who pay the highest price.
