Why do fireflies emit light?

Female Photuris fireflies flash in imitation of female P. carolinus. In this way they attract P. caolinus males who, against their will, face death instead of mating. This is because female Photuris fireflies are looking for additional nutrients in preparation for laying eggs.

They have poison

Many fireflies make defensive substances similar to the venom found in toads. Predators do not like such substances and have learned to avoid feeding on fireflies. Fireflies of the Photuris genus do not have venom, but are able to absorb it by eating other fireflies. In this way the absorbed poison passes to the eggs, to safeguard future generations.

They defend themselves…with blood

However, synchronous fireflies of the genus P. carolinus are not completely defenseless. If they are attacked by a “Femme Fatale” they emit some of their blood, according to a phenomenon that scientists define as “reflex hemorrhage”. The blood coagulates to form a sticky mass in the mouth of the cannibalistic firefly, sometimes giving the victim time to escape.

Not all fireflies fly
