The Ministry of Health has issued a precautionary recall relating to Selex brand frozen 14 vegetable minestrone, sold in A&O and Famila supermarkets.
The reason for the recall is the possible presence of tropane alkaloids, natural chemical substances present in some plants which can however be toxic to the human body.
What product is involved
The recalled product is sold in 450 gram packs, with lot number L25265 and best before date (TMC) 12/2027.
The company responsible for production is Agrifood Abruzzo Srl, located in Celano (AQ), Borgo Strada 14, 87, on behalf of Selex Gruppo Commerciale Spa.
What are tropane alkaloids
Tropane alkaloids are natural chemical compounds found in some plants, such as nightshade, henbane, and other nightshades. These substances can interfere with the central nervous system and cardiovascular system, causing symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, tachycardia, dry mouth, confusion or, in more serious cases, respiratory disorders.
Contamination of frozen foods with tropane alkaloids can occur accidentally, for example if small parts of toxic plants end up among harvested plant ingredients. Even in low quantities, the intake of these alkaloids can be risky, especially for children, the elderly and people with chronic conditions.
Precautions and advice for consumers
The recall is precautionary, but it is important not to underestimate it. Anyone who has minestrone from the indicated batch at home must avoid immediate consumption and return the product to the point of sale. In the event of accidental ingestion and the appearance of suspicious symptoms, it is advisable to contact a doctor immediately.
