There was a time when MTV was the point of reference for discovering new artists, music videos and cultural trends. You turned on the television and let the music flow, without choosing anything, without personalized suggestions. Today that model seems very distant: the broadcaster still exists, but has long since reduced the space dedicated to video clips, focusing on reality shows and generalist formats. The recent closure of several music channels in Europe has also reinforced the idea that that era is over forever.

MTV Rewind, a digital homage to the golden years
From this nostalgia was born MTV Rewind, a website created by an enthusiast who decided to reconstruct the experience of the old MTV in an online version. It is not a traditional streaming platform nor a commercial project, but a tribute to the era of “all music” channels. The idea is simple: a continuous sequence of video clips, without algorithms and with minimal interaction, just like what happened in front of the TV in the nineties.
A retro interface and thousands of video clips
The heart of the project is a large collection of YouTube videos, embedded and organized in an interface with a distinctly vintage feel, full of references to the pop culture of those years. When the site is opened, the historic MTV launch broadcast of August 1981 automatically starts, with VJs, iconic clips and vintage television rhythms. From then on, the videos flow one after the other, giving that feeling of casual discovery that today seems almost revolutionary.
Thematic channels and cult programs
MTV Rewind also allows you to choose between different thematic channels, which are actually playlists inspired by the station’s historical programming. You can navigate between the various musical decades, from the Seventies to 2025, or select formats that have become legendary such as Headbanger’s Ball, dedicated to rock and metal, Yo! MTV Raps for hip hop or MTV Unplugged, with the famous acoustic performances that have gone down in history, such as that of Nirvana. There is also 120 Minutes, symbol of American alternative music.
A project born from nostalgia
The creator, known on Reddit as ShillyLou, explained that he developed the site in about a week, driven by the desire to return to a more passive and spontaneous way of listening to music. So far, over 27 thousand video clips have been integrated and the catalog is destined to grow. MTV Rewind does not want to replace modern platforms, but to remember that, once upon a time, all you had to do was press “play” to feel part of something.
