Goodbye to Alex Zanardi! The Paralympic champion who made the impossible possible has died at the age of 59

Italy woke up to unexpected news that shocked everyone and not just sports fans. Alex Zanardi died on the evening of May 1st, as announced by his family with a note released in the early hours of the morning. The former Formula 1 driver and absolute symbol of the Paralympic movement was 59 years old and would have turned 60 next October.

In recent years his condition had remained confidential, after the dramatic accident in 2020 which occurred during a charity handbike relay on the roads of Tuscany. Since then Zanardi had faced a very long journey between surgeries, rehabilitation and specialist hospitalizations, supported by his wife Daniela and son Niccolò, who always remained away from the spotlight.

The passion for motors and the arrival in Formula 1

His passing closes one of the most incredible stories of contemporary sport. A story made of speed, suffering, rebirth and extraordinary determination. Born in Bologna in 1966, Zanardi grew up in a simple family. His father was a plumber, his mother a seamstress. At just 14 years old he received his first kart and from that moment the track became his life.

After the years in the minor categories came the big leap into Formula 1 in 1991 with Jordan. He also races with Lotus and Minardi, experiencing complicated seasons but still entering the most prestigious world of international motoring. The real success, however, came to the United States. In the Champ Car series he became the absolute protagonist between 1996 and 1998, winning titles and popularity thanks to a spectacular and aggressive style. Then his return to Formula 1 with Williams in 1999, a less fortunate experience that preceded the most dramatic moment of his life.

The 2001 accident and the rebirth that moved the world

On 15 September 2001, during a race at the Lausitzring in Germany, Zanardi lost control of the car and was violently hit by another car. The impact is devastating. The doctors manage to save him after desperate minutes, but the accident results in the amputation of both legs.

For many it would have been the end. Not for him. After months of operations, rehabilitation and suffering, Zanardi returns to driving, competing and above all smiling. His ability to face pain with irony and clarity transforms him into an international symbol of mental strength and resilience.

The triumph in paracycling and the legacy left to the sport

In the following years he discovered paracycling and once again became an absolute champion. At the London 2012 Paralympics he won two golds and a silver. At Rio 2016 he adds other extraordinary medals, building an impressive list of world titles and international successes.

Alongside sport, television also arrives, with programs such as Challenges and What if tomorrowwhere he shows the public his unique ability to describe human emotions, challenges and frailties. In 2020, the new terrible handbike accident changes everything again. Zanardi fights for years, facing another silent battle. Until the very end.

Today there remains the memory of a man who was able to transform every obstacle into a restart. Alex Zanardi was not only a sporting champion, but one of the most loved and respected figures in Italian sport who showed us that even the impossible is possible. Hi Alex, thank you for everything you have given us and taught us!
