Traveling by train to Ireland becomes more silent. The national railway company Iarnród Éireann (Irish Rail) has in fact introduced a new rule against the so -called “bare beating”, a term that indicates the habit of watching videos or listening to music without headphones, forcing other passengers to suffer the audio at full volume.
Now those who will be surprised to do so risk a 100 euro fine. This decision comes after a wave of complaints from travelers and updates a regulation already in force since 1984, when they prohibited “gramophones and television sets used in a harassing manner“.
Not just headphones without headphones: other prohibitions on Irish trains
The measure does not only concern those who transform the carriage into a improvised disco or cinema. The sanctions will also affect other behaviors considered incivile: put their feet on the seats, abandon waste or smoke with the electronic cigarette. Electric scooters are also prohibited, even folding ones.
Some lines, such as the Dublin-Cork, have already introduced the “silence areas”, wagons designed to guarantee a more peaceful journey. The goal stated by the railways is simple: to make the experience by train “as pleasant as possible“.
A phenomenon that concerns all of Europe
The problem of “bare beating” is certainly not an Irish exclusive. In the United Kingdom, the conservatives have advanced a bill to fine those who listen to music without headphones, defining these travelers among the “worst transgressors“. Also in France we do not joke: in Nantes a man was fined of 200 euros for talking on the phone too high at the station. In short, war on harassment noise is already a reality in several countries.
A measure that could also arrive in Italy?
Given the growing discontent between commuters, it is not excluded that a similar ban can also be introduced in Italy. Moreover, anyone who took a regional train at least once knows the annoying soundtrack made of Tiktok, vocal messages and videos at maximum volume well. Ireland, with this new rule, could have traced the road: a small step for public quiet, a great relief for those who love to travel in silence and tranquility.
