International Animal Rights Day: do you know why it is celebrated on December 10th?

On December 10th we celebrate human rights since it is the anniversary of Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948), but not only that: starting from 1998, on this day the animal rightstoo often trampled by human selfishness, which exploits creatures for utilitarian purposes, for fun, for economic reasons.

In reality, a real declaration of animal rights already exists (it was registered with UNESCO on 17 October 1978): even if it has no legal value, it still provides ethical and moral guidelines regarding the behavior to be followed in the respect for animals. The statement is structured in fourteen articles which underline how all animals are born equal in life and have the same rights to existence, as well as respect from man, who has the duty to put his knowledge at the service of animals and protect them. Furthermore, no animal must be subjected to mistreatment and unjustified cruel acts; in case of necessary killing, this must be instantaneous, without pain or distress for the animal. Finally, the declaration establishes the right of every animal to live freely in its natural environment, to grow according to the rhythm and living conditions specific to its species, to reproduce according to the natural cycle.

The other days dedicated to animals

Today is not the only day dedicated to a moment of reflection on the defense of all animals. The October 4 every year, on the occasion of the celebration of Saint Francis of Assisi – the patron saint of animals, the World Animal Day. The April 24however, is the day dedicated to animals exploited in laboratories for testing. Finally, the August 18th strays and homeless animals are celebrated.

The main current challenges

Even today there are many violations of animal rights:

What we can do to protect animal rights

We often don’t realize it, but our every daily action can make a difference for protecting the environment and safeguarding animal rights.

It is the right of every living being to live freely, and it is our responsibility to allow it. As was rightly said by Mahatma Gandhi: “The more defenseless the creature, the more he is entitled to man’s protection from man’s cruelty“.
