A huge compensation of one and a half million euros arrives for the family of a former employee of the Kuwait refinery in Naples who died from pleural mesothelioma because he was exposed to asbestos
In the eastern area of Naples the former refinery Kuwait it is one of the largest disused industrial areas in Europe. But here we die asbestos. This is the case of VT who died from pleural mesothelioma at the age of 70. For him and his family comes at least the relief of a huge compensation from the company.
Condemned to compensate the worker’s family with the sum of 444,787 euros and, for the damages suffered individually, an amount of approximately 300 thousand euros each to the widow and 3 children, the overall figure reaches over 1 and a half million euros.
The man worked for more than 20 years for Kuwait (formerly Mobil Oil Italiana) at the Naples refinery, initially as a pump driver and then as a boiler and production plant operator for the thermoelectric power plant.
Now the results: on the basis of the investigation by the Labor Judge of the Court, and the technical and forensic CTU, the company used the killer fiber without restrictions, and so the man was exposed practically without limits to dust and fibers of asbestos without any precautionary measures.
Now let’s turn on the spotlight on the complete reclamation of eastern Naples and speed up the process. Citizens have been waiting for decades: I remember that the continuation of pollution exponentially increases the risk for everyone – says the vice-president of the Chamber, the Hon. Sergio Costa, who adds: the rules are there, the person responsible for the pollution is known, it is no longer the time for waiting. The longer we wait, the more the risk for the population living in that territory increases and the more the need for recovery of a territory that does not deserve to be so heavily influenced is limited.
What is mesothelioma
It is a tumor that arises from the cells of the mesotheliumthe membranes that line the internal organs. The malignant form is a rare tumor that predominantly affects men and in Italy represents 0.8% of all tumors diagnosed in men and 0.3% of those diagnosed in women.
According to AIRC data, the 90% of mesotheliomas are due to exposure to asbestosa material that was used especially in the 70s and 80s of the 20th century: asbestos fibres, over a thousand times thinner than a human hair, can be inhaled and damage cells (if they are deposited in the lungs, the fibers can give rise to other diseases such as asbestosis or lung cancer).
