Why Listeria can be dangerous
There Listeria monocytogenes it is a bacterium responsible for listeriosis, a food infection that can have very different consequences depending on the condition of the affected person.
In healthy people, the infection can manifest with gastrointestinal and flu-like symptoms, such as fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and muscle pain. In some cases, however, the situation can be more serious.
Those most exposed to the risk of complications are especially the elderly, pregnant women, newborns and people with a weakened immune system. In invasive forms, listeriosis can in fact cause serious consequences.
A characteristic that makes this bacterium particularly insidious in the food sector is its ability to survive and multiply even at refrigeration temperatures. For this reason, storing food in the refrigerator is not always sufficient to prevent its proliferation.
