National Day of People with Down Syndrome, let’s learn to give them full trust

People with Down syndrome, so what? If we have preconceptions (also) towards them, children, but also women and men with intellectual disabilities will never be able to do something that is satisfying for themselves, at home, at work or in sport. How to do it? Simple: it is enough to change perspective and give full confidence so that we can talk about concrete, true inclusion.

To this end, CoorDown, the national coordination of associations of people with Down syndrome, launches the awareness and fundraising campaign on 13 October, National Day of people with Down syndrome.Think I can, so maybe I can”.

As the film “Assume That I Can” tells us (we talked about it here: Down Syndrome, the commercial against low expectations and stereotypes about intellectual disability (which will make you reflect) where the protagonist, after having experienced how her possibilities are underestimated , invites his literature teacher, his boxing teacher, the barman of a trendy club and his parents to think in a new way and use in a positive sense what is called self-fulfilling prophecy: if you believe in me and my potential you will be able to have a positive impact and then, perhaps, I will be able to achieve goals, even unexpected ones.

The campaign and its appeal will be at the center of the annual event promoted by CoorDown, which will see on the weekend of October 13th in over 200 squares in Italy the volunteers of the associations participating in the national coordination will distribute the chocolate message (made with fair trade cocoa) which supports projects aimed at the autonomy and independent life of people with Down syndrome, throughout the national territory.
