No, it wasn’t a meteorite, the mystery of the flash that shook the Bari area has been solved

For a few hours we truly believed that heaven had decided to speak to us. A sudden, dry roar, the kind that makes you stop breathing. Immediately afterwards, a light in the darkness of the night. This is how the case of the meteorite in Puglia was born, a story that crossed social media, neighborhood chats and newspaper pages, fueling wonder and fear. And perhaps it is no coincidence that, once again, when faced with something we don’t immediately understand, our first instinct is to look up.

It was the evening of January 10, 2026 when in Casamassima, in the province of Bari, the silence was blown away by an explosion heard in several parts of the town. The windows shook, someone took to the street, others grabbed the phone to film that glow that seemed to come from the sky.

When science enters the scene and extinguishes the myth

The official checks arrived to cool the enthusiasm – and also the fears. Fire fighters and law enforcement officials combed through the areas indicated by citizens, supported by technicians and university experts, including those from the University of Bari. No fragments, no craters, no signals compatible with the fall of a celestial body. Even the systems that monitor meteors have not recorded anything over the Apulian skies. And when science looks and doesn’t see, it’s usually right.

The explanation, in the end, was much more earthly than we would have liked to imagine. What for hours was called a “meteorite” had nothing cosmic about it. Instead, it was a powerful explosion that occurred on the ground, probably caused by a strong explosive in a private area.

The mayor of Casamassima clarified this without mincing words, explaining that that very explosion generated both the roar and the flash that deceived many witnesses. The checks, also carried out with the aid of drones, excluded immediate environmental risks, while investigations into responsibility remain open.
