Historic moment for Italian water sports: we have a new number 1 in the world as well as Jannik Sinner in tennis and Kimi Antonelli in Formula 1. It is Leonardo Fioravanti who rose to the top of the world surfing rankings on Friday 26 June.

And it doesn’t end here: Ginger Caimifourteen years old, the youngest ever, became European longboard champion thanks to the success achieved in Ferrol (Spain), where he beat the Englishman Emily Currie and the French Margaux Vieuge with a score of 16.44 out of a maximum of twenty points.

Leonardo Fioravanti number 1 in the men’s world surfing ranking

The 28-year-old Roman surfer reached the top yesterday 27 June in just over 10 days, thanks to the first historic victory of the World Surf League (WSL) achieved in El Salvador and the second place achieved at the Rio Pro in Brazil. From now on he will wear the yellow jersey, intended for number ones.

This is a moment I have dreamed of all my life – Leonardo Fioravanti told the WSL – I fought in the final against one of the best surfers in the world and I am very proud of my performance in the last two events. I arrived here in Brazil without too many expectations and I did so many heats against the best Brazilian athletes, and with so much cheering against…obviously the fans love their idols, but that’s why it’s beautiful here and I want to thank all the public, here is the best torcida in the world

And in the meantime, always on the professional circuit of World Surf LeagueGinger Caimi became European longboard champion at the age of 14, the youngest ever. The title was decreed by the success of Ferrol (Spain), where he defeated the English Emily Currie and the French Margaux Vieuge with a score of 16.44 out of a maximum of twenty points.

In 2014, at the age of 12, the very young girl won the European junior title, fully becoming one of the brightest and most promising talents ever in her sport. And with this latest victory, she achieved her second qualification in a row for the international tour which will begin in California on July 25th.

I am very happy with the victory – said Caimi – being the youngest ever to win the European title in the WSL is a great emotion. Now I’m ready to go on tour and I can’t wait to get started and do even better than last year
