Voluntary pharmacological termination of pregnancy (IVG): Campania takes an important step in terms of rights and access to health services and is among the few Italian regions to provide for the second administration of pharmacological treatment at home, in addition to the possibility of carrying out IVG under day servicewithout ordinary hospitalization.
This is an innovation that has been awaited for years, which makes operational a regional resolution that has already been approved but which until now had remained largely unapplied.
In essence, the new provision introduces a more modern and less invasive model for pharmacological IVG: an outpatient procedure with complete healthcare management, the possibility of taking the second dose of the drug at home and the free provision of exemption services, through consultants, specialist clinics and local services.
In this way, the traditional hospital model, which is often longer and more complex, is overcome, bringing the Region closer to the standards set by the national guidelines – says the president of the Campania Region, Roberto Fico. An important innovation that fills a delay and overcomes a now inadequate model, placing Campania among the few Italian regions to provide for the second administration of pharmacological treatment at home, in addition to the possibility of carrying out IVG as a day service, without ordinary hospitalization. This guarantees safe, appropriate and free care paths, in full respect of women’s choices and dignity. It is a measure of civility, long overdue. We continue to work for healthcare that is closer to people.
The change has a direct impact on one of the most evident problems in Italy: real access to abortion. In many structures, in fact, the high number of objecting doctors makes it difficult to obtain the service and a more territorial model could actually help reduce these obstacles and make the right more concretely exercisable.
With this decision, Campania becomes one of the few realities that have truly structured this path. Currently, pharmacological abortion without hospitalization is possible in Lazio, Emilia-Romagna and in the autonomous provinces of Bolzano and Trento. In Tuscany, although the ministerial guidelines on dehospitalization have been implemented, limitations remain such as the impossibility of taking the second drug at home or in clinics. In Umbria it is foreseen on paper, while in the rest of the Regions access is often more limited or still linked to hospitalization.
