There are stories that mark an era in animated cinema and among these it is impossible not to mention the most grumpy ogre loved by children and beyond. Well now, 16 years later Shrek and they lived happily ever after – a film that in 2010 seemed to have sealed the fate of its protagonists forever – DreamWorks has made the hearts of millennials and beyond beat again.
In fact, he surprisingly released the first extended teaser trailer for Shrek 5projecting the public towards a date already circled in red on the calendar: it will be released in theaters on June 30, 2027. At the helm of this return we find the directors Walt Dohrn, Conrad Vernon and Brad Ableson, three historic signatures of the production company who know well the deep soul and the original spirit of the saga.

A new visual style
The first impact with the film evokes a bittersweet sensation. If on the one hand the biting irony and the irreverent atmosphere of the swamp have remained miraculously intact, on the other the aesthetic impact marks a clear breaking point. The production has in fact introduced a visually disruptive change in animation, which updates the visual style of the saga by adapting it to modern digital technologies.
A metamorphosis that also envelops the first rumors about the plot. Time has also passed for fairytale monsters and the narrative, imbued with a strong family component, will see Shrek and Fiona join forces to save their firstborn, Princess Felicia. A journey that promises to reawaken the iconic comic sidekick Donkey and the indomitable biscuit Zenzy, guardians of a humor that has no age.
Voices from the past meet the future
The real nostalgic thrill, however, comes through the sound department. The original version of the film performs the miracle of recomposing the legendary cast of 2001: the depth of Mike Myers will roar back in the role of the protagonist, the sweetness of Cameron Diaz will take on the role of Fiona and the unmistakable rhythm of Eddie Murphy will give Donkey to life again.
Alongside these sacred monsters, the future knocks on the door with the entry of global star Zendaya, chosen to play the adult version of Felicia, while Skyler Gisondo and Marcello Hernandez will lend the voices of Farkle and Fergus. The involvement of Antonio Banderas, the historic voice of Puss in Boots, whose name is however absent from the credits, remains shrouded in mystery.
